Now that spring is just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about manure! The two, soon to be three, horses generater a significant amount of manure, so I need to make a place to store it until it gets hauled away. I see many people with three sided concrete bunkers, but am wondering, does anyone have another idea? I am looking to do it as inexpensively as possible, but also want it to look nice.
My guess is that concrete will be the way to go, but not being a horse person, figured I might as well ask...

I guess the question is do you want anaerobic or aerobic composting of the manure while it sits. I might build a crib out of railway sleepers.
Have you looked at how the mushroom growers do it? ....

The plan is to have someone come and haul the manure away. I have compost piles elsewhere on the property, but I cannot use as much manure as the horses produce! ....

I might use the sleepers to form your box. I guess this depends on the cost of the sleepers. You can easily sink the sleeper in the ground behind the wall for support. This tends to be how the highway and local road works do it. I fully boxed concrete tends to hold the water. I find it gets pretty soupy. This is OK if you are cleaning ever few days for 70 cows and loading into a spreader, but not great for loading into someones truck and transporting down the road.
