I don't own a tractor yet but may be buying one to maintain my 8 acres. We will be planting prairie grasses on most of it so I will occasionally need to mow the grasses, preferably with something that will mulch the cut material decently. I'm willing to go with a narrow width because mowing will be infrequent, but I would need the ability to mow up to 8 - 10 inches height. My property is hilly. Can anyone recommend an implement that fits the bill and can be pulled by a compact tractor? The next order of business would be to pick a tractor to pull it...

I'd be using a three point hitch finish mower using check chains to hold it at that height. Other wise a brush hog style mower. ....

I agree with Art's suggestions. A finish mower is going to do a better job of cutting up the grass like you described. A brush hog won't give you as nice of a cut and is less likely to cut the grass into the smaller pieces you desire. ....

Are you saying the grass will be 8 to 10 inches high when you cut it or you want to cut down to that height?

Sorry for the confusion - I need the mower to elevate to 8-10 inches above ground. I'll use it for more typical cutting heights also but I need that capability. ....

With a brush-hog mower, you can adjust the back wheel(if it has one) and the 3 point hitch to cut at that level. I do this occasionally on patches of rape that I plant for the deer. It works fine for me. I run at high rpm to realy chop the stuff up and allow it to regrow. Even with out a wheel, you could just use your 3point to hold it up and do some adjusting to get a faily level cut. Just depends how picky you are on the 'mulch' cut you state.

If you do end up with a brush-hog mower, get the optional grass blades. The are still heavy duty blades but the are built with a twist to them. This gives a little lift to the grass for an improved cut. And if you hit a little brush, they cut right through with no problem. They cost about $30 for both blades. ....
