I am about at the point where I am going to do a total rebuild of my MF 65, if I have the time. The old velum seals are all leaking and I have a huge puddle under the tractor.
I can order a new seal kit, but what are the pros and cons for using silicon gasket sealer? Most of the new car engines use these materials.

I've wondered the same thing.

Once I did substitue RTV for a cork gasket on my Super C oil pan, and suffered no ill effects, except perhaps the ridicule of passing antique enthusiasts.

On something that I expect to have on and off semi-frequently (such as the valve cover on my A...it has a sticky valve) I can see using the stock gasket since it is reusable if I'm careful. But for any part that isn't going to be removed soon; isn't run continuously in gas or oil; and doesn't use the gasket for achieving a set clearance, I don't see anything wrong with RTV.

If you're doing a full rebuild you'll likely have to have the seal and gasket kit anyway, and my preference would be for using the gaskets if I had them.

Good luck,
Bill ....

For what its worth I rebuilt two gear boxes on two seperate rottary cutters over the past few years. The one I cut my own gaskets out of a silicon sheet gasket stock and replaced the shaft seals with modern seals. I use this cutter pretty heavely during the summer months for two years. The other I used RTV with new seals, I used it a little then sold it, neither leak. My2 cents.

I was thinking of the Dow material below. I believe this is the material the automaker are using. I have used it for rocker covers but not for transmission cases. Permatex makes a similar material see the picture link, but I am not sure of the quality, this is a newer line for Permatex. ....

I would use the gaskets if possible. Thinner is better with gasketing. Good luck getting an even amount of RTV throughout the sealing surface. The OEM's that use RTV use calibrated equipment to apply that stuff. With sheet packing(gaskets) you will get material that is compatible with the variuos media's you are sealing.
Having said that I used RTV on my old Kubota's gear box with no problem. That was in a pinch, not rebuilding a whole engine. Good Luck! ....
