We have a Cub Cadet 6284D with the Cat diesel.
In cooler temps, it's very hard to start. It turns out the glow plug controller is a simple 5-second timer; below freezing that's not enough. You have to play with the key switch and get the glow plugs to cycle 2-3 times before it'll start.
Is there an automatic (temp-sensitive) glow plug controller available for this machine? Or would we be better of replacing the timer with a manual switch (like old IH farm tractors)? We previously had a 5234D that started way easier.

Greg, are you sure your glow plugs are working, 5 sec should be enough time to start, also you may have to give more throttle,if you have checked your glow plugs then the timer may be next, can you by pass the timer to see if the glow plugs will lite for 5 sec ? paul. ....

The glow plugs and timer do seem to be working. When they cycle just once the motor won't start at all, but if one gets them to cycle say three times it'll start right up.
We've tried the tricks of having the throttle wide open (and being ready to snap it back to idle when the engine catches), and "chugging" the engine to life (i.e. rolling & rolling it over until it runs on its own). Either way it needs the extra glow plug time to start.
I talked to the local Cat dealer (Ziegler in Minneapolis), and the guy in engine service agreed 5 seconds isn't enough in our Siberian winters. He confirmed there's no automatic controller available from Cat ; supposedly Cat supplied just the engine itself, so all the wiring and controls are Cub's.
So right now our options are to either 1. live with it & just force the plugs to cycle enough times, or 2. bypass the timer and rig up a manual switch. #2 is looking attractive because with the timer the glow plugs will ALWAYS cycle, even with a hot motor. Won't that burn them out eventually?
Anyway this is a frustrating mar in an otherwise good machine...

Time delay relays are available that might help. If you wire it into the glow plug circuit it seems you could extend the time off period as needed. I have used them in building control applications. ....

Greg, #2 looks good, at some point you will over cook the glow plugs, I'm not sure what the life of a glow plug is{ on time } you do have good compression,? has the injector pump been removed,? timing off on pump,? wish i could help more, good luck, paul ....

The time delay relays I've used are Potter & Brumfields. They have a dial on top used to adjust the time. You could crank the time up in cold weather and crank it back when warm. ....

The machine is new, 10-15 hours on it, so everything should be good mechanically. The pump timing has not been checked though, good idea.

I checked with the regional Perkins distributor in Illinois, and no automatic control is available. They were surprised that Cub used a timer. The machine doesn't have a block heater, but we'll be putting one in.
An adjustable timer is certainly an option. Grainger has them for $65, but I was hesitant to buy one & wire it in without good reason.

I have a 5234D. I had the dealer install 2 hot plugs on it. One for the engine, and the other for the trans. I live in northern Maine. It was -23 last week. I plugged the tractor for 1/2 hour. It started just like it was summertime!!! The plugs cost me $110 installed. Well worth it!!!! I hope this helps.
