I own a B7800 HST, Want to Upgrade to a L3130. Am thinking about going with FST (Straight Drive Trans), Any thought on the subject of those of you who have one.
I will be using mostly for light work, and bush hogging.

There's nothing like a hydro, Always in the right gear.

When you go up to the L-series the larger equivelent to your 7800 would be a L-2800-3400 and they both offer hydro's or gear but my prefered has to be the hydro for ease of pto operation. ....

I've found my gear drive L3130 to be a great all around workhorse. I think the FST is the same as the DT? My philosophy is to keep it simple. The shuttle shift is really easy to use. The only time I've even thought of a hydro is when I've been using the loader for moving dirt. Then the hydro would allow a very low gear when digging into the pile and a relatively high gear for backing and moving forward. But I don't do enough dirt digging to justify a hydro.

If your property is fairly flat the gear drive will do well bushhogging. If you have steep hills the hydro will make mowing easier but it's really nothing you can't do on a gear. You might have to downshift here and then but the synchro transmission shifts pretty easily on the fly.
I'm really well satisfied.

The DT is high and low with four gears in each. The FST is two wheel drive and GST is a power shift giving you 12 speeds forward with out use of the clutch and a hydraulic forward reverser also eliminating the use of the clutch. ....

Aha, I've always wondered what the FST was. I didn't think about 2WD. I would consider a 4WD though. Now that I've had one I don't think I'd ever go back.

I was under the impression that FST stood for "Fully Synchronized Transmission" (i.e. a gear-type model) and DT stood for "Dual Traction" (i.e. 4WD). On their website it looks as though Kubota designates 2WD gear-type models as "F" and 4WD gear-type models as "DT". I think most if not all HST or GST models are 4WD. ....

Profit! The more parts (needed or not) they make for us too buy, Well you get the picture. I have a tractor made in 2000, it has one Hydro filter. I've not had one problem with that set up after 2400+ hrs., nor do I know of any problems with that set up but the new models have two hydro filters. I have tried to stay abreast of all PIP's (product Improvement program) and have not heard of any problems ( not to say there haven't been) But I still ask, WHY?

I'm going to post my theory on the 2 filter set up. Now this isn't verified, just one bored engineers theory on why they did it.

The hydrostat is a "closed loop" hydraalic circuit, with a variable displacement pump and Hydraulic motor. The charge pump adds fluid to the closed circuit to to account for losses in the system. It still feeds off the same resevoir as the utility and steering system, but is designed as a closed loop. I suggest they have a seperate filter on the transmission as part of the closed Hydrostat loop. It makes some sense. The hydrostat operates at a different fluid pressures and flow volumes than the rest of the tractor hydraulics, so should be filtered seperately.

Again, just my take on the set-up. I for one like the 2 filter approach. ....
