I am contemplating a JD 2305 (24hp). I will be mowing 3 to 4 acres of lawn with broad hills, and will have to mow around trees and next to fences, etc. Would I be happier with a rear-mount 72" grooming mower, that would have rear-discharge, so I could trim on both sides? Or should I buy the factory 62"mmm with side-discharge? I am concerned I will be unhappy always turning around to watch the mower.

In my opinion, I would go hands down with the 72" MMM with the rear discharge. The wider width will make cutting up close around fences MUCH easier and the rear discharge gives you the ability to trim close with BOTH sides of the MMM which is a BIG benefit. I have the 72" MMM on my 4410 and I cut up close around pasture fences. It sure would be nice if I could cut on both sides of the machine up close but I can only do this with the left side. The discharge chute and guard get in the way on the right side. It would make it a LOT more capable if I had more width or offset to trim on the left side to get up under fences as well as cover my tire tracks better. ....

My opinion, ... a 72" rear finish mower may be too large for the 2305, especially if you are mowing up hill, or tall, or wet grass. I would stick with the 62" MMM. ....

If you look at Deere website they call the midmount model number as 62 but it is only a 60". They also offer a 60" rearmower but do not show the 72" as being offered for this tractor.

MMM are easier to drive around objects and easier on your neck. So if you stick with this tractor model a 60" is maximum recommendation per Deere. I have a 27HP rated tractor with 72"MMM which is usually about the point where 72's are offered. ....

I've got a 72"mmm on my 4310 and I also have a 72" rear mount that I have for sale. I'd go with the mid-mount if you can. You have much greater maneuverability, it's easier to see what it's doing, and you have more control. I don't have problems with the side discharge making rows unless I'm running through taller stuff. In that case I shake my head and tell myself that I shouldn't have been lazy and mowed when I knew I should have. ....

One thing to think about. Will you be taking the MMM off and putting it back on very often? If so, I think you will be much happier with the RFM. It takes about a minute to unhook and drive away from the RFM and probably 3 or 4 minutes to hook it back up. The MMM is not nearly as quick but I'm not speaking from personal experience, with the MMM.

I have the RFM and once you get used to it, you don't have to look behind you as much as you may think. Another good thing about a RFM is you can backup under low lying limbs.

The 72" RFM may be pushing it for your tractor but you can compensate for that by how often you mow. ....
