I have a 5ft Befco. I'm not pleased with the cut I'm getting. My 42" MTD rider mower gives a much better cut. I have to cut twice with the Befco to one pass with the rider. The bladese are sharp and I'm running the same gtround speed as the MTD. Do any of the other mowers cut as well as a rider or is this Befco pretty much par for the course?

I run a KingKutter RFM with pretty darn good results, considering KK is a low end make. The difference may be the deck width. The wider the deck, the less contour the deck can accomodate. Besides that, it basically blade speed and whether the deck has a suspended mount or ground contact. Ground contact mowers tend to give a better finish. ....

Are you running your blade RPM at the correct speed? Usually you want a 540 PTO RPM.

If you can play with your set-up to get the blade tipped lower at the front and higher toward the rear you may get a cleaner cut. If the blade is perfectly horizontal you don't always cut a clean cut. If the blade is lower at the rear the cut is nasty. ....

Is that a side discharge or rear. If mowing too much at a time with a wide mower and side discharge there isn't always enough room to allow the smooth flow of cut grass. You will get clumps of discharge. ....

I have a John Deere 72 inch 7 Iron MMM. It leaves a very good cut finish on the lawn and I also use mine cutting pastures where the grass (if you call it that) can be very tall. As tall as 6 feet in places that have not been cut in years. In the really tall stuff I have to go back over it a few times to get it chopped up good. In reasonable height grass, it leaves a very good finish. I am using the OEM blades but have a set of Gator blades that I may try out next season.

I put a set of Gator blades on my Deere F525 last year and they produces more suction to pull the grass up and then cut. They also seemed to chop the clippings up better and cut heavy or tall grass more completely in the first pass. ....

Like 2ndhandlion, I run a 72" JD MMM mower. I also have a JD 325 with a 54" deck. Both cut just fine. But one thing I have found is if I'm running in deeper grass so the discharge chute can't let the grass out, I don't get a good cut. It's usually my fault for running the chute opening right against a hill or mowing 2 ft tall thick stuff. ....

My Befco rides on four casters. I removed the shute to lessen the chance of clogging. The MTD is still much better. ....

I don't have a tach. I run at half to three quarter speed. Th deck is tilted so that the front is about 3/4" lower in the front. The MTD still cuts better. ....

It's a side discharge with thw shute removed. I don't get any clumping. I would just like to get a cut as good as the cheapo MTD. The MTD beats you to death but gets the job done faster because I only have to go over the lawn once. ....

I thought about new high-lift blades. I'm stuck with OEM and blades from ASC. I can't find them anywhere else. Befco uses a 3/4" shaft. It's nice to have a spare set. I sharpen every second mowing. ....

I use the bushhog on the back three acres. I tried the Befco once. The bushhog gave a much better cut with out nearly the load on the tractor. Tried the bushhog on the lawn with just the opposite results. I guess each has it's place. ....

I had a side discharge Landpride 5ft and a MTD 20 hp. The MTD was a slightly better cut. I replaced the Land Pride with a 5 ft Bulher and it cuts better than the MTD or the JD 178XL I experimented with. The gator blades might help. ....

I have a 6 foot Landpride, and it does a wonderful job as long as the grass is not to high. It looks like I push mowed the entire lawn. ....

I use a 3 pth 72 inch sitrex sm-180 rear discharge finishing mower with excellent results with a anti scalping roller, keep the blades sharp.
I like the rear discharge,I can mow tall grass and it doesnt (windrow) killing it and when its real tall wait a day and mow it again and it pulverizes it to dust. ....
