To clarify a misconception.
BioDeisel:
BioDiesel is generated from biologically generated oil. The easiest are Rapeseed, Canola, and Soybean. In the US, and Europe, this is the basis of most BioDiesel. This is refered to as "SVO."
On a small scale, you can also raid the grease pit of the local restaurant, strain it, and generate your own biodiesel. Check the reference http://forums.tdiclub.com/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB44&page=0 for lots of discussion, FAQ etc.
Burning Oils/Grease directly:
This is feasible in a diesel engine, (but it is NOT BioDiesel). You can mix SVO or WVO(well strained) directly into the Diesel. If you use it straight, normally you start with the "dino" diesel, then switch after the engine is warmed up. Normally, even in summer, you need to heat the SVO/WVO in the tank and maybe in the line to keep it liquid. I do not have specific info on this as it never interested my. Do a web search under "geasemobile" or "svo diesel".

Also biodiesel.org and biowillie.com are a couple of good sites as well. The easiest way to use small-scale biodiesel (i.e. getting it used from restaurants) is to have your mechanic install an automatic (thermostat controlled) heater circuit, which heats the oil to 150 degrees Fahrenheit at which point it will flow like dino diesel. Using this method will allow you to switch back and forth between petro- and bio- fuels with no trouble. ....
