Im considering buying a front-mounted blower for a JD4310. I was wondering if the height is adjustable by hydraulics, or can the height only be adjusted by raising the skids. I have a long gravel/stone drive, and would like to keep the bottom of the blower-box a few inches off the ground if possible. It seems as though skids would tear up the drive if it was not completely frozen. Any advice?

Secondly, I would like to get R4 tires but I have read a lot of mixed reviews about R4 Tires and snow. Do chains solve the problem?, or should I just avoid them altogether?

Thanks!

I'm not really familiar with the JD products, but Ibelieve most of the front-mounted blowers are hydraulically raised.

This may not accomplish what you want entirely though since the blower would not stay in the exact height you want if there is even a slight variation slope of the driveway. As the machine goes over an undulation it will cause the space under the blower to increase or decrease.

As for the R4's, they are not as much of a problem with a blower since you are not forcing your way through the snow.

I don't have a lot of problems with mine, and I push an 8' snowplow with it. Mind you I run on pretty flat even ground too for the most part.

Best of luck. ....

This is a good one as with gravel drives I like three point blowers. To run the top link short it allows the blower to run on it's heel and not be aggressive at all. Lengthing the top link makes them dig more but many don't have an effective cutting edge on them for scraping. Front mounts are easy to make aggressive just by putting down pessure on it and you can scrape blacktop nearly bare. You want to make sure that you have a larger type non directional shoe and you have float position on your valve. It sure is a lot easier job if you don't have to keep turning around to see where you are, give me the front mount. ....

MacDaddy,

The loader joystick will control the up/down of the blower, and the side to side motion will turn the chute. There is a full forward float detent that works OK on gravel if frozen, fantastically on paved drives. I use a single stage, recommended by my dealer who also made up a wider pair of shoes by welding extra metal on it. I did see a post somewhere though, where someone had replaced the shoes with wheels and was intrigued by it. If I hadn't paved my drive, I would be trying this.

Good luck

I agree with Murf on hydraulics not realy working well unless the drive is prfectly flat. I am not a premium member so maybe fanatics post says this but you could replace the shoes with wheels. They will not dig as much on the unfrozen gravel. It worked great on my small blower that fits my Yardman mower. The JD blower would be heavier so it would require a fairly wide wheel and a heavy axle.

havotec,

Premium or not, you nailed it on the head. Put a set of wheels instead of the shoes and use the float detent!

Cheers

I HAVE A ERSKINE BLOWER ON MY 790.
IT HAS TWO SKID SHOE ADJUSTMENTS 1. LEVEL WITH THE CUTTING EDGE AND THE OTHER 1 1/2 BELOW THE CUTTING EDGE TO GIVE YOU ABOUT 1 1/2 OF SNOW LEFT ON THE GROUND.

THE ERSKINE IS A TWO STAGE SNOW BLOWER AND TWICE AS BUILT AS THE JD 59 INCH UNIT AND USES A DRIVE SHAFT TO YOUR REAR PTO, THE JD USES THE MID PTO AT 1000 RPMS THUS THE SINGLE STAGE AND IS AS EASY IF NOT EASIER THAN THE JD'S TO INSTALL.

I INSTALLED MUSHROOM SKID SHOES THAT ELIMINATE THE GOUGING PROBLEM,FOUND THEM IN A SNOW PLOW SUPPLY CATALOG

THIS WORKS VERY WELL IN THE FLOAT MODE, HYDRAULIC LIFT/ROTATE /MANUAL DEFLECTOR-HYDRAULIC OR 12 VOLT ACTUATOR OPTIONAL WILL OPT FOR THE 12V NEXT YEAR DUE TO PRICE AND EASE OF INSTALLATION. ....
