Just went thru a car wash with an under carrage wash (Hey it was a free bee, a chick I know gave me a free wash number) I guess it may be a pretty expensive one now? While in the wach as the undercarrage system started moving under my truck I felt the truck start idleing real hard. I gave it a little gas as to keep it from satlling while in the wash. The check engine light came on imediately. It is still on but the truck seems to run just fine? Any suggestions? Was going to jack her up tomarroo and see if I see anything that may of blew off under the engine area. Its pretty cold right now so it will have to wait till the day tomarroo.
Anyone ever have anything like this happen to them?

Broken; Guess I'm a little dissapointed on my Chevy dealer. Took my 04 1500 in for an oil change this spring, the check engine light had came on, I asked them to check it out. The truck had about 12000 miles, so still well under warranty. The service manager said "Is it Blinking", I said no just stays on steady, he said no problem just ignore it. Well then why is the thing there in the first place if it comes on and the dealer says no problem just ignore it. I've had the oil changed there since and they still give me the same answer. I guess if their service manager reflects the policy of the dealership I'll seek another dealer for the 06 trade. Sometines you have to let off a little steam. Frank. ....

Yes I too had a dealer that could not fix a problem. Instead they pinged the trani, said," that should take care of it" I said, "take care of what? The problem is a vibration in the lower steering column, what does that have to do with the transmition? I went to anouther dealer and "presto" They found the problem, infact they told me that the lower steering columb bushing is a common fault and they see it often! So YES I too would find a dealer who actually cares.
My truck is a 99 and has 125K on it. The light just went off tonight so I am really hoping that something just got wet and now it dried out or something? ....

First: I don't know sh!h about "Chevrolet's" but normally the check engine light is a function of the EGR system and etc. and there generally is a reset on the brain module of the vehicle or once energized it is timed by days/miles of service and will extinguish itself sometime!!
Probably got wet and shorted itself sufficiently to trigger the sensor light!
Thank the EPA for another useless POS!!! ....

I am told by my dealer that if the light stays on for a min.
of 45 seconds that it will enter a code in the computer which they can retrieve. They have always hooked me up to read the code when I have had a check engine light,this code will tell them the cause. I believe they can go out(light) and still retain the code. I would try and get it
scanned to find out the problem. ....

Sounds like the oxygen sensor(s) got wet (on the vehicles I've had they are located on the exhaust manifold). Though one would assume they would be "sealed" they are in fact open to the elements as they have to sample the outside or ambient air's oxygen levels. Mud or dirt may have caused the very fine mesh around it to be clogged when it mixed with water. Since they are made of ceramic--like a big spark plug--it is possible it cracked when it was sprayed and may need to be replaced. AutoZone auto parts in this part of the country will run a free on-vehicle diagnostics on it for you with the hope that you will buy a new part from them. Worth a shot! ....

Broken, disconnect your battery for 1/2 hour then reconnect. The check engine light may not come back on.
My Jeep dealer gave me a very complicated explanation of the check engine light. Anything as simple as gas fumes at the pump can make it come on. The Jeep must make several "trips" without further problems before the check engine light shuts off. A trip is not a key start to key start. Rather it is some algorithm that determines how many times the vehicle started at a particular "state" and returns to the same "state". By "state" I mean a combination of measurements like temperature, oil pressure, etc. This could all be nonsense but that is what the dealer told me. ....

On my Grand-Am GT it cost me $100.00 of a GM service department's computer time check code to find out that when the check engine light comes on, it can mean a loose gas cap. This car has a self-loosening gas cap. It is better to buy only a half tank full at a time so you retighten the cap frequently. When the light comes on I just retighten the cap. After a number of engine restarts, the light will finally go off. The service engine light comes on every 4000 miles when you go 3000 between oil changes. After several days of driving it finally goes off. We sometimes forget to reset it every oil change.
The low profile tires lose air about every two weeks. If you wait too long before refilling them, a light comes on which is a tire monitor. The frequency of tire refills depends upon which Michigan roads you drive and the size of chuck holes you hit. Apparently big holes must collapse the thin profile tires causing the pressure to drop. The reset codes are a pain and I should just leave the access cover off since I'm into it every week or so.
Hopefully your problem has gone away and won't keep returning like mine. LOL ....

YOOPERPETE: I have heard of similar instances. I believe it was something related to the reduced level of vacuum in the fuel system's vapor recovery and subsequent emissions control by the computer (too much vacuum draw and the computer saw that as a bad thing). Conversely, on my former '99 Dodge Ram diesel if the fuel cap was too tight (or when the internal vent in the cap was not working or cloggled) it would cause such a vacuum in the tank that the electric lift/transfer pump couldn't overcome it and would starve for fuel. ....

I kindly thank you all for taking your time to answer. As most of you all said (and I kind of figure or hoped anyway) the light did go off after a few trips. Every time I turn around this year it is something else not going right! This may be a turn for the better with the new year coming. By the way, I have not even had a single strike while fishing for trout in the last 5 days (about par for my course this year)LOL

Before my crash, i had a cavalier, and it seemed that everytime i went through the wash, something would break. It wasn't immediate, but sooner or later something would break, i'm thinking maybe car washes and chevys don't mix...my nissan on the other hand.... ....

Broken, many things can trigger the check engine light on but since it happened in the car wash while washing the under side of the vehicle im sure it was water penetration.
Most likely the O2 sensor and or harness or the evap system.
If it dries out and the PCM does not see the same problem again within 50 ignition cycles the PCM will shut the light off. It will store the code as a history code if you want to see what the code was. If hasnt been on since your probably fine. ....
