I'm in this same position now, and I'm very interested in whether you picked the m7040 or the m8540. I also have a B3030 with FEL and backhoe for smaller jobs.

In addition to lift capacity, a big interest of mine is the larger hydraulic pump capacity of 17gpm instead of the m7040's 11gpm for running certain Bobcat attachments on the front loader. I can't find out whether I can put a larger pump on the m7040. If so the size of the m7040 is appealing.

If you buy a Kubota HST, you can probably safely assume they used Super UDT. Art, can you confirm?

It's very much like driving with a locker on a 4x4. Without an operating differential, it will throw you to the oustisde of a turn. That will certainly dig up your lawn. I noticed the same this afternoon while lifting and moving a log - trying to pivot the log, which was on my right, I actually noticed that I was pulling it to the left while I had the diff lock engaged.

Also, on many subcompacts, the axles are spinning at very differnet RPMs, so locking them together will make the front wheels spin faster, doing even more damage. Thi was common in some old japanese 4x4s, and caused significant axle wrap (the leaves of the suspension would warp into an S shape).

Don't use it on the lawn!

I agree with you about the parking brake. I do that a couple times a week. I wanted to include that in my list.

My 23 acres is about 2000 feet x 500 foot, going from river bottom up 140 feet in altitude, so the average is a 7% slope. So I'm in and out of 4wd, using the parking brake almost everytime I get out of the seat.

Regarding ag tires, I was only in that area because we have a record dry September, and I thought it'd be my only chance to mow a trail to later build a boardwalk there. It happened so fast - I engaged the diff. lock and it seemed to dig straight down. I was using the bush hog but my mid-mount mower was also installed, so I think it kept the tractor suspended and thereby prevented the tires from connecting with a good grip.

All is well, and I fell in love again with my F350.

I removed dozens of these by wrapping a 1/4 to 3/8 inch rope around it 7 or 8 times, tie it, that attach the other end to you bucket (teeth if you've got them). Should be no trouble and no slippage.

A few reflections:<br>

The LA 403 loader takes less than two minutes to detach. It's really impressive so far.<br>
<br>
Get a toothbar for your loader! I splurged an extra $250 based on recommendations here, and I use the teeth every hour (clearing brush, pulling fenceposts, uprooting briars, younameit). You can carry so much more, tie things to the teeth, and pick up things that are larger than your bucket (e.g., trees).<br>
<br>
The BH75 backhoe takes longer to detach, maybe ten minutes initially, but then less than five after practice.<br>
<br>
The R4 tires are so capable, yet leave no noticeable impact on my lawn (although it is most comparable to the rough of a golf course. If you are into a well grromed lawn in a rainy environment, they might not work so well.<br>
<br>
The HST transmission is a must with a loader, mid-mount mower in trees, or with a rotary mower (bush hog) in tight spaces. When I considered an L3130 I didn't mind the GST or FST, but all I did was drive it around. Under real work conditions, the HST is two less things to think about.<br>
<br>
The new telescoping and ratcheting 3-point hitch works very well.<br>
<br>
Buy extra pins! I loose one every three or four days, except for the loader and backhoe, which have built-in pin storage.<br>

Stick to your rules about requiring folks to read the manual before driving it. I waived it for my wife and now she insists on doing all the regular mowing. She was intimidated by the B3030 for a total of maybe 10 minutes.<br>
<br>
I use the 4WD very often, maybe even 60 percent of non-mowing time. The differential lock has been helpful three or four times already. I often wish the front wheels were larger, but that has only been a cosmetic concern so far.<br>
<br>
In retrospect the L3130 would have been nice for heavier-duty loader work, but it would not have worked for our mowing needs around lots of trees. Also, I can get the B3030 with the loader and bush hog in surprisingly tight spots and it's been excellent for trail-building. The resulting trails are perfect for walking or running, and also ATVs, but the L3130 would have required/created enough room for a small car.<br>

I can rent an S130 Bobcat for $155/weekend (8 hours), plus $95 if I went them to deliver it Sat. morning and pick it up Monday morning. With that alternative available, the B3030 will turn out to be the best choice for me in the every-tractor-is-a-compromise buying process.<br>

I know what you're describing with the BB60 drive shaft.

I put a big wrench through the u-Joint so that I can push the shaft onto the PTO with my thumbs while I pull the collar back with my fingers. Tokk me a very frustrating 45 minutes to come up with that approach.

What are they advantages to a mid-mount mower, only maneuverability? Easier to store? Anything else?

There certainly not cheaper!

Thanks to your feedback, I'm narrowing my decision to the B7800 and the B3030. Has anyone experienced a noticeable difference with the 4 cyl. engine?

I'm still interested in pricing experiences too.
