Outlander54, I feel your pain. I had to have my pump and drive replaced last year about this time. WOW! Took a big chunk of change out of my garage-building fund! Now I'm super paranoid about every sound and movement. I hope your problem is solved.

Thanks Art. Yeah, it was for some spacers that I decided to pass on as they were a bit TOO much (6"!). I would love to space my rear wheels out a couple of inches. Especially since I somehow got lucky and my stock wheels have the valves toward the INSIDE of the tractor rather than the outside when they are in their wide position like they are, apparently, supposed to be.

Yep. Just turn the key to the "run" position and wait for a few moments. In summer, I only let the glow plugs go for 5 seconds or so. In winter I let it go longer, maybe 15 to 20 seconds. If it's below around 15 degrees or so I'll have usually plugged in the block heater too. So far, hasn't let me down. At least as far as starting goes. :(

I used a very similar method back in the mid 80's with my 1979 VW diesel rabbit!

Yes, I probably didn't describe the HST rebuild correctly. Regardless, I got to use it quite a bit today and can confirm that it runs great; perhaps better than ever. Now I can go back to lurking in the forum more! :)

Well, we designed it as a passive solar house so it is pretty efficient. Plus we keep it pretty cool. When it's below about 10F or so outside overnight, the furnace will occationally kick in at 5am for a bump up to 68 so we don't have ice in the corn flakes. As much as I would have hoped, we can't quite heat it with a match and cool it with an icecube!

Anyhow, sorry for dragging this off-topic. To the original poster I would echo the suggestion that someone is burning trash that they shouldn't be and that's just not being a good neighbor. As much as we all hate to get the "guv-ment" involved, this may be one of those cases.

I periodically look for Samurais and Sidekicks for this very reason. My CUT just isn't the hot ticket for moving around the woods; despite being very manuverable (JD4100) it is just too tippy for comfort in my hilly woods. Also, pulling my utility trailer around is not ideal although so far I've made do. My problem with the small SUV route is not enough cargo room for putting firewood and whatnot. While I like the idea of cutting down a minipickup, I'm not sure I would still end up with what I want. And the UTV's and RTV's seem to be pretty pricey for what you get. After a recent trip to Asia I've become fascinated by the thought of getting one of the used japanese mini (as in MICRO) pickups.

...and many others. What I like about these is that you can get them with dump beds, heat, lockable cab, etc. No, they're certainly not road legal but then, neither is an RTV. Anyone have any experience with them?

My experience has been with trail building for hiking/mountain biking but I would think a lot of the basic priciples apply. A good resource on trail design and construction can be found at the link below. For my place, I've a mix of "driving/riding around stuff" trails and a few "arterial roads" for my CUT and trailer for getting logs and stuff out. Most of those were done before I owned it so I'm not sure how they were done but I tend to just cut the trees down as low as possible. I would think stump grinding would be optimal though.

Sorry, it has been a while since I read through the entire thread! Lazy me! Amazingly, I don't seem to have this problem on my 4110 (about 4 years old and 680 hours) but this seems like a possible solution if I ever do. :-)

I used a middle buster with my JD4100 to dig a 300' trench about 12" deep so that I could run ethernet cable in 1 1/2" irrigation pipe. Worked just fine although I did make several passes to get the depth right. Only problem I had was that it rained between the time I dug the trench and had to go back and cover the whole shee-bang back up with my rear blade. THAT was a mess and took twice as long!

LOL. This just reminded me that a "real" farmer friend of mine calls the enclosed tractor cab the single greatest improvement in agriculture in the last 75 years!

Thanks, DRankin! I've looked through your pictures before but it looks like you've added some new ones with more detail! I've been seriously thinking of doing some truck tires (Super Swampers TSL's to be exact) as they would appear to give more traction than the turfs yet be a little kinder on the soft ground I have. Yooperpete thanks for the widening tip...I know I've read about that on some (lawn) tractor pulling sites. And sorry about hijacking your thread!!

One note of caution....be careful not to smother the roots of the maple with too much soil. Not if you want to keep the tree. Those ARE the roots that are feeding the tree after all. Years ago when I worked for a municipal forestry department we would frequently plant parkway trees and leave a nice bare soil "basin" around the tree. We would occationally come back in fall and find a dead tree that someone had placed sod right up to the trunk because they didn't like that "bare" dirt around the tree. The result was that the tree roots didn't get the moisture they needed and the tree died. Maple are particularly suseptable to this.

I would like to second some of Murf's comments regarding building a GOOD trail. I don't know exactly what kind of terrain you're talking about but drainage is all important. The link below is really for single-track design (hiking, mountain biking, horses) but many of the points are applicable no matter what you're doing.

I'm actually in a similar situation with a lot of trails that I would like to build (for a variety of purposes). Personally I'm looking at a combination of box blade, rear scraper blade and, last but not least, hand tools! (pulaski, Mcleod, rake and tamper). :)

I believe that the conventional wisdom is that you MUST stay within a certain percentage of OEM size front to back to keep the wheel speeds in proper proportion to each other. I have checked the tire recommendations for my particular tractor (4100) and found that there is a fair amount (in my opinion) of latitude...at least more than I was under the impression that I would have.

Be sure to check that the connection for the transmission safety lockout has not come loose. This is the connector that keeps your tractor from starting if it's in gear. I've had mine come loose twice on my 4100....the first time requireing a service call (now I know where to look!). Anyhow, check under the seat on the left side of the tractor. There is a small post that comes off the tranny as I recall that a small electrical plug goes on. Worth a look.

If it's that wooded are you sure that grass will even grow? Something to keep in mind. One summer...about 23 years ago I think...I worked for one of those lawn services that does liquid fertilizer application. I can't tell you how many times we got calls from folks that wanted grass to grow up under their big maples and were frustrated that just spraying on a bunch of fertizer didn't do the job. I'd have to, gently, tell them that it was just too shady to grow grass.

Yeah it MUST be getting dark out there! I recently bought a couple of Hella Aux. lights to mount on the ROPS. My plan was to hook them up (via relays) to come on with the other lights. Hadn't thought about needing a bigger alternator. I suppose it would be pretty easy to set it up so that I used either the stock lights OR the ROPS mounted ones (mostly since the stock lights get blocked by the FEL if I'm using it)

The steamer idea (from page 1) intrigues me but, as noted, the "hot pressure washers" available from someone like Northern seem both very pricey and perhaps not exactly what you would want (don't need a 400psi spray to get boiling water on some grass!). I know that hot water works from some "experiments" we've done around our place on the cursed garlic mustard. Anyone have any insight on something low cost that might be appropriate?
