Raise the loader and curl the bucket up. Drain the hydro fluid. With the drain plug still out, drop the loader (via gravity). When nearly down, halt the drop and curl the bucket down (gravity again). Finish dropping the loader. You've now removed as much of the hydro fluid as you can without doing full disassembly of the hoses.

After a couple of weeks of troubleshooting with no indication of specific fault, the problem disappeared, the tractor behaving normally for the rest of the season. If it's not broke, you can't (or shouldn't) fix it. It's put up for winter now; I'll see what happens this spring.

Snooks - As I recall, the spider was attached by three screws. It definitely wasn't pressed on.

Use a multimeter to check for power to and from the raise/lower switch and at the relays. Use the resistance setting on the multimeter to check the grounds at the relays. Use a jumper from the battery to each relay coil to exercise them and use the resistance setting on the multimeter to check continuity across the NO & NC contacts. Use two jumpers from the battery to power the lift cylinder directly and observe whether it extends and contracts.

The new valve covers have a screw-on filler plug, and are metal, not plastic, which makes for a better seal at the gasket base. Mine blew out a few years ago, and I never found any cause. After replacing the valve covers, I've never had another issue.

I've had similar issues with a variety of equipment, usually after being in storage and not run for a while. Try removing the float bowl and run a fine piece of mechanic's wire up through the main jet to free any accumulated crud. If the wire doesn't fit, don't force it: get a smaller gauge wire.

Sounds like fuel starvation. 1) Try replacing the filter (easy & cheap). 2) Check your fuel lines for cracks or leaks allowing air to enter (also easy & cheap). 3) Have a look at your fuel cutoff valve (a little more complex - but not bad - and a little more expensive if you need to replace it). If it's restricted with crud or not completely opening, that could limit the fuel flow.

The spanner I modified measures 2.25" ID. Since iron pipe isn't manufactured to anything near exacting standard dimensions, you'll just need to grab a piece, measure the ID, and determine the difference. It doesn't have to be a precise fit, so you can probably use 'most anything to whittle it down (including a rat tail file, if you've got the patience and endurance). But you're obviously - and fortunately - set up with more sophisticated options than that.

It's most likely water or anti-freeze. It could be winter condensation as you surmised, or it could be natural condensation from combustion if you ran the engine several times recently for brief periods without letting it get fully warmed up. Or it could be a leaking head gasket. (You don't want the latter.) In any case, it's water or anti-freeze emulsified with the oil.

I'd change the oil and run it a few times, monitoring carefully for the occurrence of more sludge. If more occurs, you're probably looking at a leaking head gasket; if not, be happy.

While your carb is off, soak it for an hour or so (more is better) in Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) to dissolve any varnish and deposits. It's also a good idea to run a piece of fine mechanic's wire [i][b]gently[/i][/b] through the jets (do not force it in any way) to clear any stubborn leftovers. I've had to do this on several pieces of equipment - particularly those that sit unused for extended periods.

Thanks, oneace. After a little more examination, I saw that the clamps are made by Oetiker, and there are a couple of versions of pliers that are needed to properly tighten them. Rather than paying over $20 for the pliers (and that was on eBay), I used narrow worm-drive clamps that did just fine. The latter were preferable, anyway, since once the Oetiker clamps are tightened, they can't be removed except by cutting them off.

Thanks for responding, jspec12. I have that one - it's the tech manual for the series, which applies to both my 4X2 and my 6X4 diesel. As I found with the latter, there are a few things covered in the owner's manual that don't appear in the tech manual (and, of course, a whole lot the other way around), so I'm trying to complete my documentation set.

gatoraider - I'm looking for two of the JDG813 tools as well: JDG813-2 (spanner for spider) and JDG813-3 (tapered holding tool). (I fabricated my own version of the JDG813-1 puller.)
