I have only once in 120 hours ever had do go from 5th to 6th gear. The 5 foot brush hog will not be any problem for the 790. If the brush is that thick, you won't want to go in 6th (5mph) anyway as you are likely to hit soemthing hidden in the weeds.

Hey, how the heck you been?? "Longhair", I guess that's an accurate description :) Didn't realize you were a tractor guy too. I get on the Ford site rarely these days. Other than tires, my truck is much the same and running perfect at 105K. Probably why I don't post anymore, truck has been perfect...so not much to complain about. Truck so steady it's boring :) Last time we talked you had made some performance mods, guess it worked out.

I bought the tractor last year and keep adding attachments as I go. I really needed it, place looks much nicer now.

You get up this way lately? Email me if you do. Hope business is good.

Just wrap a chain throught the lift arms of the cutter and through the frame , or over the axle or through the rim on the tractor. I wouldn't worry too much about the cutter vanishing by itself, itis probably harder to steal than the tractor as a whole. You need 3-4 guys to lift it and place it in a truck or on a trailer. Between disconnecting it, and hefting it away, that's pretty risky just for a cutter. If it were some expensive contractor type implement for construction EQ, that might be more tempting.

Many people around me has tractor and compact tractor EQ in plain view and I haven't heard of any thefts. Even the JD dealer has no real security and his tractors and implements stay put. I have heard of construction EQ disappearing though from a local guys lot, but that's probably from past employees.

Due to space concerns, I have the tractor, RM, RFM, BB, and weight box all partially out of sight behind the house, but hardly "secured". So far no problems and I don't expect any.

The 790 hoses are all marked "3000 PSI", the 2400-250 PSI we areall reading with one shim pack should not be a problem. I don't think any of the other JD compact models that are operating at 2500 PSI from the factory use hoses rated for more than 3000PSI ???

I have 11 acres and 6 horses, the JD 790 is perfect. You should be able to get it with FEL and mower for right about 15K. I apid 14.9K with FEL and rotary mower and R4 tires. The belly mower would raise the price, but you can make some up by getting the turfs or ag tires, the R4s where about a 400 option as I recall.

I have a 790 and use it for a similar size property, although with different attachments. If had mostly lawn I think I would have ordered it with the 60"mid-mount mower or 72" rear mower instead of the rear rotary mower I got. It is a great machine and will suit you well at an affordable price. Now that I have purchased a rear mower I find it to be a very good lawn cutter.

I am sure the Kubota is a good machine, but I can't comment on them as I've never operated one.

Yeah, that rock in picture 10 had me a lil' worried. The tractor was very new and I wasn't really sure how hard to push it. Now with about 110 hours on it I think nothing of stuff like that. The tractor has noticeably more "oomph" than it did when new as well.

I have a chance to pick up a used JD 261 5 foot grooming mower to pull behind my JD790. I have some tight areas so a 5' or at tops 6' is what I need. It appears to be in good shape (some surface rust no dents or abuse) The dealer wants $500 and I think that is a good price. I looked online and I think JD wants $2000 for a new 261 mower.<br>

Any comments on the price or general performance of the 261 mower. It has the front anti-scalp roller but not the optional front wheels, which I may add later ( I heard JD sells them as an add-on)<br>

That's ridiculous that JD said that, they need to know the year of a tractor for finance reasons among others. Don't the need such info. when importing these smaller tractors as well? I bet hey have this somewhere in a file with dae of sale listed. If not, how the heck are they going to tell if my repair is covered under warranty if I move halfway across the country? Manufacturers of most big ticket items can tell you plenty of info. on anything the make and later sell. Certainly they aren't going to rely on my receipt, they get lost and dealers do go out of business, so there MUST be a backup system.

When you buy a used car you can call the manufacturers customer service to see if the warranty is still expired/valid (not voided due to owners modifications, etc) The can tell you manufacture date, sales date, delivery date and usually warranty repair info. as well, it must be the same or similar with tractors.

If JD is going to rely on my paper receipts for date of manufacture/sale I think I just got a LIFETIME warranty as long as the keep making my model ;) Seriously though, I would call someone else at JD, it sounds like you got a moron. Certainly the finance department might have better info. on waht year tractor they loaned you the $$ on. I can't picture JD finance going to court and telling the judge they want the $$ they loaned MR. xxxx for a tractor and then stating they can't tell what model year it was????

Maybe that's an idea....if all else fails stop paying them and then when they file a claim it should have the model year listed on it :) :)

Before you buy or rent check out your county's ag extension. In my county (Orange, NY) the county will rent a real nice seeder for $25 an acre, not time limit just a meter on the machine. It's a real beauty of a machine as well, some JD model, near brand new.

They don't give it out to seed the lawn on some mansion but here in NY horse keeping counts as an agricultural endeavor so it's ok.

I haven't done it yet. The machine was in my buddies barn for storage for most of last season so I bet getting it would be easy. I think he used it on a hay field and then it sat. He sadi I could pull it no problem with acompact 4x4 tractor, I just need to hook it into the existing hydraulics.

Well it's around 50 degrees here in upstate NY and you know what bthta menas....it's almost time to break out the tractor. While I got plenty of tractor time moving sno and manure this winter it will be nice getting to some new projects and finishin last years.<br>

I see what yuo are saying regarding the PowerGard warranty. however onlinr the let me configure SOME tye of extended warranty, choose a deductible and a term for a 790, that is where I got the price. I don't know if thta is another plan because it appears Powergard is a fixed $250 deductible plan. That area of the site is temporarily down soI can't check now.

I also seem to recall my dealer offering me something, but I say NO to those things so fast maybe I am wrong. From everything I have read extended warranties(with rare exceptions) are a BAD deal for the consumer. It's like Vegas ot Atlantic City, they take your $$ because the odds of them paying out more than you paid are slight. If they weren't ther would be no extended warranties.

With 6 horses their is always a scoop of heavy...err..."dirt" available, and it's free!

I can even loan ya' some :) :)

The weight bars don't attract flies so maybe your solution does have some added benefits. I mentioned to the manager at the health club that any old weight plates would be great to have, maybe when they upgrade I can snag some CHEAP.

Yes, there is another board with some good members and the tractor information is very good, but......you have to be politically correct at all times and don't use any naughty words :) :)

Stay here and you get the best of both worlds. Not that we do anything outlandish here or have limited vocabularies, but we can freely discuss ideas and opinions and use words like darn, damn or butthead without being chastised ;):)

All in all, this board does a better job of maintaining quality conversation by letting the posters police themselves (mostly).

Yeah, I have 2 children maybe I can manage to have, 1 CPA and 1 lawyer. They could draw straws and the loser has to be the lawyer :) :)

I did my taxes in 1/3 the time last year; your not kidding about needing a CPA in the family!

As as far as the farm tax, here in NY there are several advantages that offset any $$ earned that you need to show The biggest gain being school tax credits. I don't apply for it but if I boarded a few more horse I could. What BS, all of a sudden I'm a farmer and get big tax breaks?? That's not who the law should help...then again it shouldn't help some multinational conglomerate that owns 2 million acres somewhere either, but it does.

If I where smart I'd apply for it, deduct every nail, fence, feed, bedding, hay, fuel, tracor part, etc I buy and save some $$$.

I think you jinxed me. I was wondering how in the heck you twisted it? Well...in the last 2 days I have hit the small boulders (hidden in snow mounds) at the end of my driveway while lifting and moving foward slowly to pile snow! Now I see how it COULD happen.

No damage, but it certainly reminded me of this thread.
