When I have my rototiller attached to my JD 4100, the lift arms of the 3pt hitch rub against my R4 tires. I know that I can adjust the swing on the arms but my question is how much? In general should I adjust the arms to reduce the swing for all of my implements or should I adjust the arms each time I change the equipment? As you may guess, I want to minimize the amount of work I need to do to attach an implement. I do not think that I will gain to much by reversing the tires. I've read that I may only get 1.5" by doing so.

The easiest way not to have to make those adjustments is make sure that your attachments are the same distance across the pins. The companies that build the attachments for three point hitch try to build them to fit as many sizes tractor's as they can. This unfortunatly leaves people on both ends of the spectrum in your situation. ....

Hmmmm... didn't think about that. The rototiller model that I have can be adjusted either right or left to suit the tilling application. The tiller was shifted to right when delivered and I centered it to distribute the weight as it seemed that one side was tilling a little deeper than the other. I believe that the cat 1 standard is 26". Now is that 26" for the frame length or 26" between the ends of the pins?? ....

Terry: My reference book says the lower hitch point spread for a Category 1 implement should be 27 inches. This is the width to the outside edges of the implement frame, not the width to the ends of the pins. ....

I've been trying to find out that information on the Web. With no luck!! Thank you for the response. I'll verify the measurements on my rototiller. ....

Because I use compacts commercially, I get the pleasure of buying (read paying for) lots of them, in fact 2 or 3 a year by the time 'fleet rotation' averages out. One of the biggest complaints we had (the dealer is super, & is now MUCH more educated at doing PDI's) was all the little things that got overlooked during the PDI process. The top of that list was the lack of proper setup of the 3pth linkage, it should be set so that there is some slack, but generally not much. Certainly this is NOT done at the factory, and NEVER done by the dealer (mine excluded now) during PDI. It is a case of 'flat-rate fever' I think, the faster a mechanic does the PDI, the more per hour he effectively make (sorry Art, I don't intend to 'beat up' dealers here) so little things like 3pth linkage adjustments, tire pressure, loader adjustment (not just bolt them on, actually line everything up), light aiming (if adjustable on your model), and body panel alignment (so there is no rubbing, which means no paint, which means rust starts faster), amongst LOTS of other things gets over-looked and only fixed on complaint by the customer. Bottom line, if you don't like it tell someone, if it doesn't get resolved to your satisfaction, complain to someone else. Best of luck. ....

Aha, Murf comes to the rescue again. I believe that you are very correct in your observation about the dealer setup. Being a newbie to tractordom, I would have thought that the dealer prep would have covered the 3pt hitch linkage setup (i.e. assuming something - please don't remind me about the word assume). Everything else seemed great!! I'm about to do my 50 hour maintenance and will spend some time adjusting the linkage. That is why I pay attention to this forum. It has been very helpful. Now, if I could only get some assistance with the payments........... ....

Terry - I had the same problem when I finally got around to using the 3 pt on my 755. I, too, have R4s. They seem quite a bit wider than R1s. Even when the hitch was tight there wasn't much clearence. The solution, at least for me was simple - swap the rear wheels. left to right, right to left. I picked up almost 6" of additional room between them. I measured. ....

Terry, I had the same problem on my 4100. I reversed the rear tires and swapped side to side. No I have no problem at all. Sure you do only get 1.5" extra, but that's on each tire. So an extra 3" total is a lot more clearance. Especially when in most cases only about an inch more clearance is all that is needed. Also the tractor is more stable with a wider stance. ....

Great news!! I'm a dense at times so let me get this clear. You switch the tires and reverse the rim and this gets you an additional 3" of stance. With that in mind you keep the tread direction the same and the valves will be then on the inside, correct!! Not a big deal. Just trying to understand..... ....

That's correct Terry. When you swap the rear tires, the valve stems will face inward. ....
