I need some advice on felling a White Ash that has split right down the middle starting about 15 feet up where is it is split horizontal like the back cut. The vertical split atarted at theat spot adn now extends up and down from the horizontal break. Worse thing is that as it the split comes to the base it gets narrower and narrower. Am I right in thinking this is not a cutable tree without some large log skidder?

Hard to tell without seeing it in person, but I’ve seen split trunks felled by wrapping them in strong steel cables to keep them together long enough to drop them.

Best of luck. ....

Interesting solution, I have seen cracked telephone poles repaired using heavy guage metal banding when the crack is near the base. Since my experience with the banding is "none" and compounded by the horizontal breach at 15 feet up, I think I am going to wait on nature or get a land clearing crew in to take care of the 10+ dead ash trees I have this spring. ....

An old timer told me that on a problem tree like that you could build a hot fire on the side of the tree that you want to make it fall. I am not sure I would want to spend that much time under a tree like yours building a hot fire :-( . That leaves you with just waiting for it to make its move on its own schedule. ....

Well we finally had some wind that felled that tree ! Thank God. It went down while I was in bed .. I heard it snap and fall even though it was over 600 feet from me. It split opposite the back cut that was already there up 15 feet and fell perfectly in the direction the back cut indicated.. very nice. ....
