Should I buy a Shibaura SD2243 that I saw but is in questionable condition.

So I am in search of a compact tractor with a loader and I have a small budget.

I found a Shibaura SD2243 I know nothing about this brand.

Its in rough condition but it seems to run good.

2 things I noticed it moves real slow at first and the loader has almost no down pressure.

Can I even get parts for this thing?

Does it have enough power to run a finish mower or a tiller.
Any input would be helpful I do not want a pile of junk.

Lots to cover here.

First read this thread about the relationship of Ford New Holland, Perkins, Yanmar and Shibaura for some history.

What is your dollar budget?

How often will you be using the tractor? If you have just one project in mind might be better to rent and not have to worry about maintenance.

Are you a gifted mechanic or new to the idea of fixing stuff?

Parts for Shibaura tractors are available. Len Sheafer on this site has gotten parts for many members.

You say it runs real slow, can it run at PTO speed? When standing still you should be able to lift the front wheels off the ground with the loader.

Best of luck.

Well I need something that is dependable not just one day I am fairly mechanically inclined so I probably can fix things with help and parts the pto did work but the bucket would not lift the wheels off the ground could that be a clogged filter or is the pump giving out my budget is small around 4 grand or a little more the guy selling the SD2243 wants 3500 thanks again for your help ....

It may not have down pressure. Are there 2 hoses to each of the lift cylinders? For a running fwd tractor of that size with a loader $3500 is a very reasonable price. It was made to run a tiller in Japan. & could run a 5-6" finish mower. ....

Thanks again for responding your advice about reading up on the company was helpful it raised my confidence in the company the guy who is selling it has a small back road tractor lot that sells mostly things like 8Ns he knew nothing about it and told me he thought it was made in Germany but I saw the Japanese on the tags and knew that was wrong. I'm going back today to look at it again and take some photos it's really beat up but it looked like it was just cosmetic my biggest concern is parts because of the company being out of business I saw people calling this a grey market tractor was it marketed in the US I will look to see if it has 2 hoses to the cylinders thanks again for your help ....

I bellieve the Shibaura D22 series were built in 1977 to 1978, Shibaura went out of business 13 years ago in 2008. So the Tractor you are looking at is over 40 years old.

The good news is Tractors are not fashion statements like cars so having the latest is not that importantt with a tractor.

Assume you are buying tractor to get stuff done.

The question is how much sweat and time you want to put into repairing the tractor to keep it going. Versus using a trouble free tractor and very little to no repair time.

The model you are looking at is so old a google search on it brings up very little, thankfully Len here can be of assistance finding parts.

For my money I would rather buy a more popular brand like a Kubota B7500 that is half the age of what you are looking at has a dealer network and parts and has a solid reputation.

For example here is a 2003 B7500 for $6900

https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/200303519/2003-kubota-b7500

At 18 years old it will not be problem free but will have way less problems than what you are looking at.

That said there are many hobbyists that look for old Model T cars and Mode N tractors to restore and rebuild. Just be sure your up to the time requirement.

Have fun sorry if I seem too negative but a dose of reality is better than sugar coating it !

Best of luck!

Thanks that is why I am asking I completely agree I drove the tractor today and it isn't going into 4 wheel drive I could probably get it cheaper because all the old men at the back road tractor dealer are scared of it also they can't get it in to 4 wheel drive either it runs great. ....

So I went and looked at the tractor again and the guys at the tractor dealer can't figure out how to get it into 4 wheel drive I assume it's the lever to the right in front of the seat but it definitely was not turning the front wheels even when it looked like the lever was in position I did drive it around for a bit and it ran great and after a few minutes the bucket picked up the front wheels not sure what to do if it won't go into 4 wheel driveand the 3point hitch works off a toggle switch on the fender I like it but I might offer less money ....
