the purge port on top of the left rear axle is leaking axle grease. what could cause this?

well, now it appears that it only leaks in four wheel drive and not from the top but somewhere around the axle? ....

Then my guesses were wrong; probably needs a seal replacement, though the 4WD baffles me.
If you locate the leak and a parts source, it's a routine job for a tractor or truck mechanic. Or stay in 2. ....

I'd lay odds on it the tractors tires are causing the issue, does it come out of four wheel drive easily? ....

Does the leak start only after it's been in 4 for a while?
(Art, are you thinking that drivetrain lockup could pressurize the rear diff or axle?) ....

I ran the tractor in two wheel drive yesterday and check hte lest rear axle. sure enough, it is leaking fluid but not as much as when in four wheel drive. will try again late in 4wd but it appears likly the the seals are leaking. This is my first tractor and I am learning a lot in a hurry. ....

I hope the leak wasn't diminishing because it's getting empty. If you run it with the axle or diff dry you'll soon need more than a seal. ....

The BX and several other brands that use the fan to cool often will weap out the vent when the fan is broken do to the oil's expansion. We have seen other units that when the gear trains are over heated they expell from the lowest point or possible leak area.
One it could be there is no shaft that spins or would throw enough for it to leak unless the four wheel drive is engaged. Or it could be warming it up enough from the axle wind-up from poorly sync'd tires. ....
