I have a 2004 new holland 33; bought last may and changed oil.filter oil seemed clean. changed again last week with 55 hours and filter oil was like right out of can. Clearly not filtering. What would be the cause? only 225 hours on the tractor

You're right to be concerned; oil from a diesel starts turning black after a few hours. In any case, what's in the filter should resemble what's on the dipstick.

I've not heard of this, and am reaching here. Is it the right filter? Are there no extra gaskets that came off previous filters and stuck to the mount? Was it full with the unused-looking oil, or was there just a little in it?

I'd get a NH filter, fill it at least half-way with oil (depending on how it mounts), tighten according to instructions, and check that after 20 hrs.

Meanwhile, don't worry about it; I'm old enough to remember when engines didn't have oil filters. ....

Thanks; the filter was the NH listed in the manual. Yes, I have never seen the oil any different than what i changed out. Called the dealer service dept. and they indicated they had never encountered the problem. This is the second change since I had it. I noticed it on the first and thought it odd; the second time it was evident and hard to miss. I'm thinking there must be a clog, but then there should be no oil in the filter, perhaps. Or maybe a problem with the pump. ....

Until you get it solved, change the oil (diesel rated) more often then the manual says, keep the level to full, and replace the drain plug with a magnetic one.

If there's a pressure gauge (or if you install one), that would reflect the pump condition but I'd guess there's a bypass, likely near where the filter is, that lets the oil flow when it's otherwise plugged as it is now.

You could ask the dealer to check with head office about this issue, and bring it in when they have an idea. Or see if you can get at least the manual page that shows the engine lubrication system. Or try a high-detergent oil for a bit.

I'm little confused by the term "filter oil" myself.

Do you mean the oil in the used filter? If so, and it's what's clean, is the oil drained out of the engine the same colour?

There's a world of difference if all the oil is clean than if just what's in the filter is clean.

Unless there's something seriously wrong with the engine I fail to see how the oil could not be going through the filter to get to the pump.

Best of luck. ....

Hate to ask this question but, you are changing the engine oil filter and not the hydraulic oil filter?
