Have to buy new tires for my Honda CRV, what tires do you like best. I have been doing some research and I have been getting many different opinions. Some saying that the old standbys like Michelin are not so hot.

About the only tires I run close to what you're looking for are Continental CrossContact UHP's.
I said "close to" because my SUV runs 295/40ZR20's that I think might nearly stop your CRV. ;)
At any rate, Continentals parent company, General is also the maker of tires I've had good results with on other vehicles. I have no complaints with their products.
I've also had very good luck with Cooper tires over the years.

I'm not a big fan of Michelins. I discovered how thin the inner liner on those were when fixing flats in a tire store. The thin liner does help them run cooler, which makes them last longer, but it was a lot thinner than any other brand which makes me a bit uncomfortable. I've seen Goodyear play games with advertising vs. reality so don't buy them either. Firestone can make a good tire, they often just don't.
Lately I've been buying Toyo Wild Country A/Ts, and have been quite happy with them, but they may be a little noisy for your needs. We drive a lot of gravel so are looking for deep tread.
There is nothing like Nokians for ice and snow.
Probably not much help here....

For one of the most common and important consumer items, tire buying is not simple.
First you have to decide what you want because tire design is a compromise. You can have quiet, wet grip, heat resistance, high-speed stability, rolling resistance, smoothness, ice traction, snow traction, cornering grip, etc., but not all together because generally if a tire gives more of one characteristic it has to give less of another.
Then there's cost. Has anybody in history paid list price for one? Tire shopping is like going to an oriental bazzar.
Then there's sizing. When I got replacements for my first car there was one size for the 53 Chev. Now it's a major research project to get the optimal dimensions for what you want.
Installation? In the old days when the tread wore (and they sure did) the only question was reuse or replace the tube. Now I expect to have to revisit the installer because it's leaking at the rim or the kid didn't know about directional installation or how to handle wide mags.
Sorry I can't give you an answer rather than some grumpy generalizations but an easy and safe decision is to get what the factory put on. ....

Dennis I found good help at Consumer Report and there is a site that rates tires that also helped me that sells them direct to you. No idea their name.
For pickups I preferr Michelin. Found Uniroyal had a lot of flats and a tire dealer happened to mention that to me he found the strangest items in them. Seems to be something about their thread design. Which makes me ask who is Uniroyal's sister brand, is it General?
I think Firestone and Bridgestone are same company.
Murf I did not realize Cont. were a General product. Know they are rated well.

I've settled on some favorites depending on the application.
For High horsepower farm tractors Mchelen ended up being my favorite, but like all tire companys they do have a good grade and a cheapie. A good tire dealer will steer you thru the maze.
For SUV, Pickup and regular car tires Firestone still leads the pack, but again a reliable dealer will lead you thru the crappy grades to the ones you need. The Firestone dealer we use had been in busniess since like 1933 and now on their third and fourth generation of the same familys. They are one of the few places you can still tell the wife or kids to stop by for a set of tires and they don't take advantage trying to sell the Mrs. or kids something they don't need. I guess that's why they are still in business while some of the flashy dealers have folded.
I have used Cooper, but their dealers seem to have dried up.

Thanks for all the input.
All the tire dealers around here were very pricey. I remembered that my Honda dealer had a buy 3 get 1 free on 4 tires, so I checked them out and they beat everyone else by a couple hundred bucks.
They had the Continental Cross Contact LX in stock so I went with that. I fully expected that the tire deal would be just the beginning and that they would tell me all the other stuff my car needed.
So after the inspection they recommended front and rear brakes, transmission flush, and differential refill. The price of that would have been $670, which I declined.
They were right though that that work needed to be done, so I started on the brakes today.
The deal on the tires besides the get one free included a free Nook Touch e reader, which my daughter needs so it was a great deal.

My experience with the one set of Continentals I have owned was very good and their reviews are generally very good so you probably did fine, especially with the deal. The dealer, huh? Whoda thunk?

I wooda thunk. Like batteries, the best in one size is usually a different best brand in another. Some Continentals did test low, but by far the best snow traction was from a Continental winter model. ....

I think I've heard the wife's sister talk about something like that.
My wife is an advid reader who can consume two books a week. We both have advancing arthritus in every joint we have and in some joints I didn't know I even had so that might be something she could use.

Dennis, I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the Continentals.
Two of my Benz's have them, including the SUV I mentioned above which has Cross Contacts. Not that I would ever violate any speed limits, but I can tell you without hesitation, they are as smooth as glass at 100+ mph and still going fine after 60k miles.
Let me know where you score all the free e-books though. My good lady goes through them by the scads.

Most communities public libraries offer online access to ebooks based on your library card. Our system lets you take out up to 5 at a time and you set up a list that you want and wait for them to be available either in epub or kindle format. You just have to read fast as there is a time limit just like at the library.
I would never do this but I have heard that there is software called Calibre that can be used to change from one format to another. I also understand that with certain plugins for Calibre you can even remove the time limitations as well, so you can read them whenever you want.

I think the site Ken was talking about is Tire Rack. Whenever I'm considering getting new tires I go to their site to read reviews. The reviews give some feedback, both good and bad from everyday drivers that have purchased the tire in question. I have also purchased tires directly from Tire Rack. They have great prices and provide you with the names of garages in your area they will deliver to and that will install the tires. Buying from them was a good experience. Good luck, Steve.

So far so good, the tires look great on the vehicle. Car handles well with them, seems to ride better, more confident driving.
Just got the free Barnes and Noble Nook eReader that you got if you purchased 4 tires this week, plus it was buy three get one free when I bought them so, I am very happy :)
