2003 Jinma 284
In the last 2 days I noticed that when 4x4 is engaged and the tractor is pulling /pushing or turning hard (forward or reverse) a loud noise appears like jumping gear tooth or jumping a spline, the noise is loud and the tractor shakes, appears to be coming from the front axle, either differential or wheel gears, less likely from the transfer case or front drive shaft but I am not sure, there is not noise if the tractor is in 2WD. I am thinking about broken bearings or worn out shafts. Any idea, where should I start looking first. Thank you

Noise location can be difficult to isolate when tractor is running/moving. Could be in the front diff, drive shaft, transfer case, sliding gear, etc. I'd first determine if the front wheel drive is actually working or not.
1. Park tractor with engine off, block rear tires.
2. Jack up front end so both tires are off the ground
3. Put tranny in gear, put select lever in 2wd
4. rotate one front tire, the other should spin. Repeat on opposite tire.
5. move selector to 4wd
6. rotate tire again, neither should spin. Repeat on opposite tire

Let me know what those two tests reveal, and at which point (if any) the noise becomes apparent.

Thanks Greg:
After jacking up the front end I went to rotate the left tire, the tire war rotating freely on 2WD and when 4WD was engaged, the right tire was not moving at all and noise was coming from inside the front differential housing. When I rotate the right tire the left tire begun to rotate in the opposite direction but the rotation will come to a sudden stop and bounced back in the opposite direction.
Knowing that I had a broken differential I drained the oil (lot of metals shavings) took the whole front end out of the tractor and I opened it up:
Right differential side gear had 4 missing teeth 2 on one side and 2 just opposite.
The driven bevel gear (ring) was loose, had 2 out of 4 bolts sheared off as well as one of the pin, the other pin had stretched its hole on the carrier housing and the 2 other bolts were ready to give up .
The 2 planet gears need replacing as well.
One thing that caught my attention was how much play it was between the side gears and the planet gears, looks like they need more washers behind the gears to keep all of them tight together.
Ring and pinion looks OK, I still need to do lot of cleaning and bearing inspection.
One thing that I am concerned about is the driven gear (the big one, the one that goes on the wheel shaft) it appears to have lot of play on its shaft which allows some tilting of the gear and that may separate it from its matching gear (bottom gear, vertical shaft) Is there any way to tight that gear?

I've been fortunate not to have had a front drive casualty in any of the 4 Chinese tractors I've owned. That's the good part. That bad part is that I subsequently cannot competently answer your questions about how much play is engineered into the design. But my SWAG would be that some - if not all - of that play you describe is engineered in. Given that there's no center differential, there's got to be some "give" built in to compensate for when the transfer case has the front drive shaft engaged. Short of wheel slippage, there's no other compensation for those times when front and rear diffs are turning at different speeds.

But what I can tell you is that the vast majority of Jinma 200 series front drive failures occur when using the loader with 4wd engaged. All too many owners unfortunately only find this out for the first time when they hit the Internet to find out what went wrong. This has been a known weakness of the 200 series - especially the earlier models - for over 10 years now. Knowledgeable and ethical dealers/sellers reveal this to new owners right up front.

I am sure that it was broken when I bought it just to discovered it when I started engaging the 4x4, I read about the front end weakness and failures on this models specially when using the front loader, unfortunately you have no many choices as the weight of the loaded scoop makes the rear end light living you with almost no traction on 2WD, I will fill the rear tires with water and see how much it helps. At least I will have a piece of mind knowing what is inside and that it was put together right. Give me couple of weeks and I’ll let you know how it runs. Thank you. ....

Loading the rear tires will only compensate for the weight of the front loader itself. You still need weight behind the tractor to compensate for the material in the bucket. I recommend a three point ballast box. I got one from John Deere for $210. I've got a bigger loader than you, so had to also order the 9" extensions (to hold more wet sand). But the box without extensions should hold enough weight to counter whatever you can lift with a Jinma 200 series bucket.
