Someone gave me a used disk harrow--in pieces---
What I would like to know is how far apart should the leading edges of the disks on the front should be---Rite now I have them at 5".
It is a small one & I have not used it yet.
( I don't see a way to post a photo of it on here)

There's no rule. If you want separate furrows for row planting, space them according to the rows you want. If you want to use the harrow like a rototiller, space them equally along the width of the front frame; if the ground is so hard that even with a weight the disks won't bite enough, take some off and replace them as the worked soil permits. ....

In my part of the world all the disk I have seen use equal spacing between the blades. The bigger the diameter the wider the spacing. They also all have solid spacers used so there is no easy adjustment. My disk is a King brand with 20 inch blades and there two size spacers that are made to use with it, 7 and 9 inch. Totally guessing but if your blades are say 15 to 18 think 5 inch would be a good width.

If you are using the disk to break the dirt up totally you don't want the blades to be so far apart they leave dirt not being turned over. Of course the narrower the gap the easier it is to fill up with trash. ....

I believe you are talking about the gap in the center between the gang on the right and the gang on the left.

That being the case it depends on how far the gang on the rear is apart as well!

The front gangs are normally just about touching each other on many discs in order remove enough dirt so when the rear gang throws the dirt towards the center it doesn't leave a ridge. So discs will also use a tooth to help lower the amount that stays in the center to reduce ridging. ....

So Art was correct. Not assuming here, have you used a disk before? If not suggest you spend all the time you need to play with it with different settings, the angle of the gangs. The sharper angle cuts better and throws more dirt. Slower speed cuts better and throws less dirt. Faster speed does not cut as deep and throws dirt further. Trash is cut better with sharper angle and slower speed.

Then all of those will affect how level the dirt is left and any ridges. Also allow the axle to run in the dirt will really wear the bearings and spacers and gets costly. I give up depth to save that wear. ....

We have taken many a trip through east of you, Maggie, Cherokee and a time or two maybe right at you. Those were too many years back to remember the names.

I live about 50 or not much higher than sea level about 20 miles from Myrtle Beach. So you know why I like your area. Of course tourist like both and when there I am tourist.

As you have found out there is some very good help here. I came looking for help about 7 years ago and can not leave. Hope you find it the same for you.

Yes KT----I find TP very helpful & the response time is way better than other forums I am a member of. I like the way so many chime in with additional advise. Seems this is a very friendly place.
I'm still browsing around here on TP---many areas I have not been to yet-----But I will be around for a long time. ....
