Large removable studs could replace chains, but the site you quote didn't work, and the other Bair Claw sites were hopeless in providing useful information. ....

I tried the link and it worked fine for me.

At any rate, I'd hardly go so far as to say studs could replace chains, they don't do the same job, nor are they designed for the same circumstances.

Studs are for traction on a hard slippery surface, chains are for traction in snow, sand or mud.
