Anybody know the dealer markup on tractor-type equipment? For instance, what percentage of list was the dealer charged for its Ferris, Walker, Grasshopper, Kubota, Kioti, etc? I know it's complicated by special financing and freebies from the distributor, but just generally. It's easy to find dealer cost on new cars, but I've not seen data on farm equipment.

Markup is by dealer so it varies. I ALWAYS start by asking to see thier actual invoice. I want to know what they paid and then will give around 5% above that. After ball, they have to pay the staff and light bill. Be sure that you know if there are any dealer incentives. This will determine how low they will go. Some dealers right now are getting rid of equipment AT invoice to move it. Tractors are the same as cars. Finding a reputable dealer is the trick. I just drove 500 miles for a new Kubota because the dealer had a great price that more than offset the gas and time. Plus he and his staff were awesome to deal with. Anyone one the westcoast, from Redding north, may want to check out Mid Valley Tractor in Eugene OR. And no, I do not work there. I hope this helped. ....

Yes, a dealer can ask what he wants, but I wanted to know the difference between wholesale (dealer cost) and the "retail" (published) price. Seems to be rather a secret.

I could offer 5% above cost for something rusting away on the lot. But if I wanted the dealer to order me, say, a current new Kubota, I doubt 5% would be worth it for him to uncrate and PDI the thing, never mind covering his overhead. But what do I know. ....

There are big differences between dealer and factory invoice. Dealer invoice is any arbitrary price a dealer decides. Factory invoice is the actual price he paid from the manufacturer. With New Hollands (blues only which is Ag not construction or "yellow"---separate corporate divisions) Ford has a deal with them to sell blues to FoMoCo employees at dealer cost which is factory invoice plus prep, destination, etc. This is just like buying a car at employee discount--you get to see all the "secret" paperwork. I saved about $3500 on my blue and since I had a good relationship with the dealer I saved about $8000 on my first "yellow" skid steer (which is construction and not eligible for discount) I saved about $18,000 on the seond (which NH graciously helped the dealer out to quash a law suit--but it was a discount nonetheless).

The dealer made his money of 6% on the blue deal as "hold-back" or monies he gets to keep before sending on the balance. The yellows were also 6% but those were deals between me and him and didn't involve Ford or NH. I know this after a long sit-down with the dealership owner.

To answer your question not even the dealer can tell you straight out what they have in a machine with out running the numbers on each individual unit. The biggest reason is the commodities market---steel and rubber can really affect prices daily.

You likely won't be off on a good note with the dealer asking to see his books as it were, so I suggest getting prices offending (read: pissing off) dealer(s) you don't plan on working with in the future.

That said, if you have dealers that offer publicized discounts, it won't be an issue. But for dealers who don't give employee discounts...

A local NH dealer has now advertising employee discounts to GM employees. But then again this is the Motor City so these guys demand parody with their unuion bretheren (my opinion what drives advertised discounts). ....
