Hi -

We have been looking for a tractor, and had a YANMAR 2820 (33hp) 2 wd DIESEL tractor come up on craigslist in our area. I have never heard of the Yanmar brand, but after looking at various sites, have not been able to find a tractor that matches this description produced by Yanmar. Do you know anything about this tractor? How do Yanmars compare to other brands?

Yanmar makes good stuff but my understanding is they never sold them in the USA under their brand name. JD uses a lot of Yanmar engines and has relabeled some of their tractors, with some modifications, to sell under the JD brand. Yanmar diesels are among the best in the world.

That said, most (all?) Yanmars sold in the US are gray market tractors. That doesn't mean they are bad, but they weren't meant to be sold here and don't meet various safety specifications (ROPS, seatbelts, etc) that are required here. Parts can be difficult to find and manuals may not be available or might be in Japanese. Many were brought in used from other countries and refurbished with various levels of detail.

What sort of work do you need to do with it? ....

All yannies are diesel, and their engines are widely used in boats, construction equipment, and other tractors, notably JD.

Many are legitimate "export" models (designed for sale in North America), but that model is one of the many "grey market" ones (designed for sale only in Japan and therefore not supported by Yanmar, for instance, with manuals in English). There are a number of dealers who do support the greys, but that one is a rarer model, and the lack of 4WD lowers its utility. ....

We have 30ish acres that is currently in hay fields, and baled by someone. We are looking for a tractor to use for general mowing, post holes, and other general stuff. The one posted on craigslist comes with a Bulldog Backhoe attachment (which would be very helpful as they put all the water lines on the property 3 feet or more underground). Hubby is the handy type, but an english manual would be helpful.

How hard is it to find parts for most used tractors? Would you say that this one would be one to pass on due to harder to find parts? I would think that with a refurbished (which is stated in the add) tractor that being able to get parts to fix it as needed would be fairly important. ;) ....

Oh-oh. You don't want a hoe on the back without a loader on the front (to equalize the weight and when lowered to help stabilize when digging). And you don't want a loader on a 2WD compact becasue of traction problems. And because a yannie frame isn't designed for those kind of forces a loader and hoe should be mounted to a subframe.

For parts availability on that one, ask dealers. I'd suggest Aaron at Hoye Tractors, Gary at Jamieson Tractors, Len at Shaefer [sp?]. For English manuals see the Murray Publishing site.

As for it being rebuilt or factory reconditioned, ya sure.

A 30-year-old unit may not be the best first tractor, even if parts were available. If there's a Kioti dealer near you (which you'd need because they're not trouble-free) they have a modern line of real bargains, all with subframes and dedicated loaders and hoes. ....

You are looking at a Viet Nam "rebuild". These "rebuilds" are some of my best parts customers. The YM2820 is a really nice model, but I'd recommend buying a tractor from a dealer that knows what he is selling & imports good quality original tractors versus repainted parts tractors. . ....
