I have 1982 1540B Shibaura 4X4 I am looking for water pump and the 2 cyl is pumping out white smoke out the breather hose on the top of the motor. I think it needs a new head gasket and if so where do I get one from?

The GreyMarketTractorClub helps Shibaura owners.
If not, a pump can often be repaired, and if you can get the old gasket off in one piece, some shops (e.g. Hoye Tractors) custom-cut duplicates.
If not, look for a Shibaura dealer in Japan, getting a translator if necessary.
Good luck. ....

Smoke is one thing, and water vapor is another. Which is it? If it actaully smoke, it might be valve guides, or blow by from the rings. I think, if it were the head gasket you'd be seeing oil in the coolant or vice versa. I'd look at both the oil and the coolant before you start tearing into it. ....

Rhardmeyer,
White smoke from the breather hose is a good indication of having a bad intake valve.
Either the intake valve, or the valve seat could be pitted. The other possibility is that the head may be cracked clear through the intake valve hole.
Hope you find a new head gasket for it. But you may want to take the head in and have it inspected, as well.

Joel, I defer to you (I'm admittedly not a mechanic), but you don't suspect the rings? ....

Earthwrks,
I don't think it would be the piston rings. If the rings were bad, combustion gasses would leak by the pistons and into into the crankcase. Additionally, engine oil would end up in the combustion chamber.
Bad rings produce very high levels of crankcase pressure. This usually shows up as excessive smoke exiting through the crankcase vent.
Badly worn rings will also produce an unusually large amount of exhaust smoke.....something other than white in color.....usually blue or black.
When smoke starts blowing out through the intake air hose, it's pretty much a sure thing that combustion gasses are being vented up through one or more or the intake valves. Either the intake valve, the head, or the head gasket is faulty.......sometimes a combination of these things.
Overheating is a common symptom with a blown head gasket. High pressure gasses are probably entering the cooling circuit through a crack in either the head gasket, the head, or through a crack in the block. Most often it's the head gasket.
A faulty water pump will cause overheating problems, as will faulty thermostats, radiator caps, collapsed hoses, and low coolant levels.

I took rhardmeyer's comment "...pumping out white smoke out the breather hose on the top of the motor." to mean the vent in the valve cover, i.e. PCV hose, not the air intake.
If that is the case I'd be leaning towards rings myself.
Best of luck. ....

Hey Murf,
Yep. If I mistook the "Crankcase Vent" as being the fresh air intake hose, then both you and Earthwrks would be correct.
A short list of some of the things that cause large amounts of smoke to vent from the crankcase are faulty rings, a hole in a piston, or a cracked piston. Could also be a badly worn, egg-shaped, cylinder.
I may have misunderstood the terminology used.

I thank all of you for your help
The white smoke is coming out of the vent hose in the valve cover.
The motor runs same as usally just a little on the power.
I usded with no problems shut it off started up two hours later white smoke is coming out the vent hose.
I put my hand on the hose where the white smoke is coming out I don't fell much vapor.
Thanx Bob ....

Bob, sounds like you may have nothing worse than a stuck piston ring, nothing uncommon on an older diesel that is not worked hard.
The nature of a diesel is that it needs to have a good run, some real work, every so often to keep the carbon deposits under control.
If you don't do it using hard work, give it some "Sea Foam" every now and then. Follow the instructions on the can as to adding it to the fuel, but double or triple the dose first time around, after that just follow the label.
Best of luck. ....

In Dee-twoit don't you just dip some out of the river? LOL
I heard you don't need to wear a PFD if you're boating there, if you fall overboard or the boat sinks all you have to do is stand up, dust yourself off and walk to shore.....
Best of luck. ....
