When I was a kid, owning a jalopy meant starting it by rolling downhill, getting buddies to push, or getting another car to pull or push.

Would roll-starting a diesel tractor be the same?

Geared tractors, yes. But it can be more difficult than your gasoline jalopy because of the much higher diesel compression ratio. And in the case of turf tires on loose/low traction surfaces, probably impossible.

I've tried doing that on tractors that had stuck pistons with no luck. The rear tires end up slipping or skidding.
These were gear trannys too.

And I have to think a hydro wouldn't turn over at all. Just a guess--haven't tried it. I know I can put my hydro in neutral and roll it freely. If I put it in gear on a hill and shut it off, it will slowly roll without the engine turning over.

My skid steer is a true hydro vs. my CUT which isn't. The service manual says it cannot be towed without damaging the drive train. It too when off and on a hill will slowly creep (automatic brake needs adjusting) ....

A long time ago I had a John Deere 4010 diesel gear drive farm tractor that just wouldn't start much below twenty above. We used to pull start it with the 4010 in road gear if the road wasn't snowy or icy, otherwise the tires just slid. I've never tried pull starting anything hydro, but I don't think it will work and might damage something expensive. ....

I have not done this with a diesel but generally if you use a higher gear it will work for gasoline engines. Trying it with low gear is like locking the brakes :) ....

Reading this has caused me to go humm. Have two tractors and one gear trans and one hydro. The hydro I pulled a few months ago and it did not fire to run (turned out to be problem with fuel cut off (manual one) the knob was bad and not opening for fuel flow. The engine did turn over and have used it a good bit since then and have noticed no problem in any manner. But it was not pulled far. ....
