I have a Nor-Trac NT 304 I have not been able to find the Transmission fluid that is in the manual. API Service: CF/SL -30W. Someone told me (store clerk) that it was motor oil is that correct. I will appreciate any info you can give me on this.
Thank you Tom Hicks

Like I tried to tell you in the Nortrac forum last month; Chinese tractor questions don't do well outside the Chinese tractor forums.

Tom, I'm a little confused by your post.

You stated the API service standard that the manual calls for, but you say you can't find it?

Do you mean you physically can't get your hands on it? I'm not sure that's the case though because you say you were talking to a store clerk, so presumably you were at a store with an auto parts section.

If that's the case the shelves would have been full of that oil, it's REALLY common stuff.

Best of luck. ....

Murf -
The Chinese-English translated manuals (Chinglesh) that come with these tractors can be highly misleading. Literally translated from the Chinese, the books say to put 30W diesel-rated engine oil into the gear boxes. Obviously, the North American solution is to ignore what the Chinese use in their domestic tractors, and use conventional gear oil in their exports.

The same Chinglish manuals say to use the same 30W diesel-rated engine oil in the hydraulics too. Given the wide availability of proper hydraulic fluids in North America, those instructions should be ignored as well.

Are there any tractors that use 30W motor oil for hydraulics? Our Bandit chipper uses 30 gallons of 30 weight. ....

Probably. But I'm sure they are tubed, valved, and pump-rated for it.

30W is way too thick for winter use in these Chinese tractors. With fluid that thick, you have to waste a good 15 minutes worth of fuel waiting for the hitch and/or loader to work, or even for the steering wheel to turn. I find AW32 is typically called for in cool to moderate climates, and AW46 or AW68 is often chosen in moderate to warm climates.

Thanks Greg, that explains it.

Our hydrostat commercial mowers all run straight 30W oil in the hydraulic system.

Best of luck. ....
