I'm getting ready to buy a tractor. I need to do some major rehab of a couple of acres of old pasture that has gone to seed, is mostly level; I also have irrigation ditches to make/maintain; post holes and foundation work, and the usual projects. A compact tractor in the size of 20 - 35 horsepower would work. But here's the "wrinkle": when I'm done I'll have 3 - 4 acres of hay to cut and bale. For that small an amount I'm not sure I can count relaiably on getting somone else to do this so I'm considering doing it myself. With that added task, and assuming I can get compact-sized hay equipment, what are teh best choices? I'm not set on "name brands", but am leary of cheap stuff that will only cost more in the long run.

First welcome to TP.
Have you found the hay equipement? I did have a web site for a company that had compact hay equipement. It will be at least Monday probably before I could get that to you.
Based upon what you saying, to me you must first know what you will be doing hay equipment wise and then you can work backwards on the tractor.
For the ditches, will you need a backhoe for that work?
Are you looking to buy used or new? kt ....

Huh, three to four acres of hay to bale? While lets see, the minimum horsepower is about 35 PTO so that means 45 repectfully engine horsepower for a minimum to run the haying equipment.
Now lets add up that baling project, hay wagon, noew are about 4500 now so lets say an old wooden one that needs some work, 1,000. A mower would be about 1,500 and a older baler might be found in good condition for about 1,500. Probably better have a rake to, 500 for that and if a tedder might be needed that would be another 500.
You might want to pass on the baling, for the cost and time but you know your schedule best. The size difference between a 25 to 35 horsepower tractor and a 45 is not much different! Probably about 12" max in wheelbase difference and maybe about 5" wider.
I'd go with the L-series in the Kubota line up and if haying was more then a maybe look at the L-4400 or MX5100 but I didn't see your total acreage. ....

Thanks! The haying isn't definite, but if I do go for it, it will dictate the tractor size as you said. I do need a backhoe. Used -- with low hours -- would be fine, except that I'm going to finance it and most of the major manufacturers are offering 0% financing on NEW equipment, so factoring in the interest paid I might be better off on a new one.

Yeah, I realize that cost for the haying equipment might not be totally cost effective, but as I said, trying to get someone here to bother with such a small job might be hard. I was thinking that maybe I can find decent usedequipment for a compact tractor. If so, I would give it a shot maybe.
