I am researching the purchase and installation of a hydraulic top link for my 4500 Mahindra with a FEL. I went to Carter and Carter Machinery and was directed to the following questions. Could someone enlighten me as to their meaning? A couple I think I know the answer to but I want to be sure.

CUSTOM FIT QUESTIONS
2. Is your tractors hydraulic system closed center or open center?
3. OEM Top link Length-
6. Does your tractor have a front-end loader? If so does the control valve have a power beyond port on it?
7. Does your tractor have exterior rear couplers?
8. If you want to purchase a complete system, where do you want to mount the control valve? You need to mount the control valve first to know how long you will need your hoses.

You'll have to check your manual to find out whether or not your machine uses an open circuit. You should be able to find this information under the hydraulics section of your manual. MOST tractors utilize an open circuit. This does not mean that yours does.
Measure the length of your current top link. You should provide both a fully shortened length, along with the length when fully extended. This will allow the Carter
folks to provide you with a cylinder of the proper length.
Most loader valves have a power beyond port. I'd be surprised if yours doesn't.
Do you have rear remote hydraulic couplers on your tractor? Unless you special ordered this option, it's highly unlikely that you have them.
Most people mount the auxiliary hydraulic valve somewhere below and to the right side of the seat, just above the rear axle. You'll have to find a spot that offers a good mounting platform, as well as easy access when sitting in the operator's seat. I'd like to see the tractor manufacturers standardize this so that a mounting block is included as part of the forging process.

Thanks Joel for the info. I have quoted some of what you wrote and would like some clarification.

What is meant by port? Is this some place on the hydraulic system that can be accessed that would allow the installation of auxilliary hydraulic couplers?

I didn't buy the tractor new so I'm not sure what was ordered. However, would rear remote hydraulic couplers be something like a two quick connect hydraulic connectors which, in the case of my tractor, is located just behind and below left of the operator's seat. They would be used for something like raising wheels on a large disk harrow.

Is the auxiliary hydraulic valve to be mounted something that might come in a center link hydraulic link kit? Are you speaking of the actual control for the hydraulic center link? Would the hydraulic hoses leading to it come from the power beyond port somehow?
Again thanks for your help. I have had several tractors but this is the first with a FEL and the first time I have ever considered installing a hydraulic center link.

Dave,
If you have two quick-disconnect couplers located at the rear of the tractor, then you already have everything you need to operate a hydraulic top link. You're all set.
Somewhere near the operator's seat, there must be a valve that controls the hydraulic fluid flow to the rear remote outlet.
(One of your rear remotes has positive pressure from the hydraulic system, as soon as you operate the valve. The other is a return line to the hydraulic fluid reservoir.)
You can simply connect your hydraulic top link to the rear remote ports, then control it from the comfort of your seat.
Since you have rear remote outlets, I'm guessing that they're already plumbed into the power beyond port of your loader. There should be a valve in that circuit, which controls the fluid flow to your rear remote outlet. It should be right near your seat, or it could possibly mounted on or near the fender.
At any rate, you should have no problem hooking up a hydraulic top link to your tractor. Simply remove the mechanical top link you currently use, and replace it with a hydraulic top link. Plug your hoses into the proper rear remote outlets, and you're all done.
90% of the work has already been done for you. You simply need a set of short hoses long enough to reach your rear remote outlets, and the proper Quick Disconnect fittings to connect it up. Make sure your hoses aren't so long as to possibly get caught up in the PTO shaft. You don't want to have them so short that they're stretched as tight as a fiddle string either. Find a happy medium length that won't bind up when raising and lowering the 3-point hitch.
You next need to figure out which valve controls your rear remote outlet, as well as determine which port has pressure to it, and which is the return. They may be marked for you already. If not, mark them yourself, so that connecting to the ports in the future will be a very quick and easy task.

Thanks again Joel. I do have a control for the remote hydraulics. So, a hydraulic center link should be no problem. I just finished putting on Pat's Quick Hitch and with that and the convenience of a hydraulic center hitch I'll be all set. ....
