Hello all! The CTB has graciously created a new topic for us labeled “Articulated Tractors”. This would cover Steiner www.steinerturf.com, and Venture Products, www.venturepro.com and other articulated compact tractors that you might want to talk about. Please feel free to post your comments, suggestions, and insite to the new topic. I know that one of the Steiner brothers from Venture Products frequently visits the CTB looking for feedback, and offering helpful comments.

I have just put my Steiner to use in a new and unique application as a "torch" tractor to light off prairie grass on one of my steep slopes for the annual spring burn. I placed the propane tank in the slip scoop on the tractor and held the flame thrower in one hand as I drove along igniting the grass. It was much faster than my past practice of walking and carrying the tank. I don't recommend this unless you have experience in burning prairie grass. It can start a major conflagration. ....

I've heard of some different uses, but that one is unique! Knowing me, I would set the county on fire! How about sharing your pallet move ideas with everyone? I thought it was a great idea!

Jack, I thought B-B-Qs in Texas were big but yours must really be something to see. We spend most of the time trying to avoid grass fires but you start them deliberately.
I'd never heard of Steiner tractors until I read about them on this board. It started me doing some research and they look really interesting. ....

Controlled burning of prairie grass is done to mimic the natural fires caused by lightning on the original open prairies. This helps crack open seed pods so the renewal of grass and flowers continues. If you don't burn it for several years, the flowers tend to diminish in number and brilliance. For you fellas that are using duals... Do you find that besides the stability, they also give you additional traction. I also thought that I read that the outer tires have about 6psi of air in them?

All 8 tires can be run at 6 psi with duals on a Steiner 420 or 430. I only remove the duals for snow clearing with the V-Blade. Duals may enhance traction ,but their primary function is stability. ....

I run duals all the time on my Steiner 430 Max. If you have to trench while backing up a hill, the rear tires will sometimes slip while weight from the trencher transfers to the front. The duals really help provide additional pulling power. Also, if you have to cross a spot where two trenches intersect, a single wheel will sometines fall in and the tractor will not pull itself out. Also, mowing with the contour of a hill will cause the front end of the tractor to creep downhill because of the weight of the mower deck. Duals prevent a lot of this, especially if you have to carry part of the deck's weight with the hitch. Duals will not change the articulated tractors turning radius as would happen with a solid frame. As for engine speed - I run my 25hp Kohler at 3,500/3,600 rpm all the time. This is not for power but rather to take care of the hydraulic system. A Steiner mechanic will tell you to keep the rpm's up, even if ground speed is low, and this is to avoid burning up the hyeraulics. I just let the engine have a lot of time at idle to cool down. My stump grinder has a 23hp Kohler industrial engine and it idles a lot to cool down as the hydraulics get red hot after an hour or so of steady grinding. That and frequent oil and filter changes are the best thing you can do for a small engine - in my opinion. Does anyone know where to get Steiner belts and blades at a good price? I have been able to cross reference some items but others are still a mystery. Love and machine but hate the dealer mark up on consumables. ....

Hi, Jim.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you used to have a Steiner and now have a Ventrac? I'd like to get a Steiner and I'd like to get your opinion if so.
