I've started removing a Woods 750 back hoe from a Deere 750, 3 point hitch. I'm stuck on getting the hydraulic pump off the PTO.
I've looked at the owner's manual, but it doesn't help.
Any suggestions?

Have you had it off before? There's a groove running around the circumference of the pto shaft and the pump coupler uses a ball and spring mechanism to lock onto that groove. There are a couple of different kinds of mechanisms. The ones I have all have a ring around the coupler that you slide back to release the tension on the balls, which releases the lock and then the coupler can slide off. I don't remember how the other kind of locking mechanisms work but if you fiddle around I'm sure you can figure it out. ....

I remembered another kind of lock, my old chipper had one. If there's a push button on the collar around the coupler you need to push it in while sliding the pump off. ....

No, I haven't tacken it off before. I just bought it. Its a 1986 Deere, and I don't know how long the back hoe has been on. So I don't know if its frozen.
I found what looks like a sleeve, with a spring loaded button. That sounds like what you're describing. But I can't get it to slide. I sprayed some WD-40, but I didn't want to force it, because I wasn't sure it was.
I appreciate the help. ....

If you have found a botton about 5/8 inch diamater with kind of a rounded top that sticks out about 3/4 of an inch on the side of the pto sleeve then that is the release botton. give it a good dose of WD 40 and if the botton won't push with your thumb then get a hammer and just tap it lightly, it should move unless it is terribly rusted. the button has to be pushed down level with the top of the hole it's in and held there while you slide the coupler off the pto shaft. Best of luck. Frank. ....

Ken and Frank have it right. I have Woods 650 about the same vintage with the same PTO pump setup. You may need to use a small hammer to "help" it along -- just try to pull it straight back; otherwise, it will hang up if it is cocked at any angle. Mine still comes off with a fight today. I think I may have used a Wonder-bar (crow bar) to get it off the first time -- just make sure the pin is depressed. ....

JimP and I both have the 650 Woods, and not unlike JimP, every now and then, the little bugger sticks a bit. Wd40, PBBlaster, any of these penetrants will work to spray on and seep in for a bit.
My recommendation, however, is not to use a metal surface to contact the press/release button on the pump coupler. Rather use a piece of wood, approx. 1 in x1 in., and tap that with the hammer against the press button.
Two reasons: number one, everyones -tap- is different in strength, and one could very well pein over or mushroom the press button, to the point where it won't depress.
Secondly, remember your thumb USUALLY will be able to depress this button. If you smack it with a hammer, a burr may develop, that you don't know of or cannot see. The next thing is a tetanus shot at the local clinic as your hand is bleeding out! Use a small block of non marring material.
