I've been reading to thread about the e-mail/ cashiers check scams. I've got a item or so I'd like to sell on the net but never tried as I did'nt want to deal with the scam artists. So where can you advertise on the net and avoid all that? Frank.

There's nothing wrong with using e-bay, just keep your eyes open. Ask for certified check only, or you can also use paypal if you know how that works. Check the feedback on the buyer and you should be OK. You'll definitely get the biggest exposure to potential buyers by going with e-bay. ....

The only way I'd take a certified check is by depositing it and waiting 14-21 days for it to clear. They are easily forged and often are. I'd take cash. PayPal works but you need to set up a separate checking account and keep a minimal amount of money in it - otherwise the buyer can pay you then go back to paypal to claim they never received the goods and paypal will happily take the money right back out of the account. Oh, and paypal also gets a cut so it's not good for high dollar items. ....

I'd have to agree with kwschumm regarding certified checks (esp. in ebay auctions). There was a scam around here where someone was forging them, and buying used cars (from private owners). He'd then sell the car to someone else before the check came back bad. So the second buyer got screwed and the first seller usually got their car back - in much worse condidtion.
Locally, if I would trust a cert. check, but I would make sure I verified the person's identity and address, etc.

One thing I did on some ads was to state cash preferred or wire transfer. But I said I would accept a check (regular or cashiers) but would require 30-90 days to verify the check is valid before the goods would be released to them. ....

Another payment method that works is US Post Office money orders. I think they're good for up to $500 each and you can exchange them for cash at the post office. The post office can trace serial numbers to see if they're legit. They don't keep a ton of cash on hand for large amounts so if you're selling something for $20k it's not an option. ....

The other reason e-bayers like postal money orders is when they go to the post office to mail the item the post office, like was said earlier, turns it into cash that way the seller doesn't need cash or a different check---no ou-of-pocket for the seller.
Also, in some towns there are local storefronts and eben backroom homeowners who will sell your itenms for you, but by the time they take their cut plus e-bay it hardly makes it worth it---unless you hate dealing with it. ....

Thanks all for the comments and advice. I've never had a paypal account, so I don't know much about it. Our daughter has had quite a bit of experience buying and selling on E-bay, so I'm going to ask her to help me list a couple things,(she doesn't know it yet)then maybe I'll get started on my own.
