I lay sod commercially in southeast lower Michigan. True, even when done right seed takes awhile maybe two seasons to fill in. And it depends on what seed you use, how you care for it, etc. Seed also is more drought-resistant as it sends down roots as deep as needs to. Sod doesn't always which makes it prone to drying out. I have removed sod that had been down for two years and it peeled back with no roots like carpet. Sod is instant gratification, easy to install--just don't over or underwater or it will rot or dry out and die. Sod will literally grow on concrete if you keep it watered. ....

tom,
I live in South Carolina. I have planted Centipede, Zoysia and St Augustine. In the yard with the zoysia both sodded and planted zoysia, used sod where run off would be a problem and seeded elsewhere (well much of it). Both did well. If I did not need to worry abour water run off, I would only seed.
The zoysia sod did well my yard but in rented yard and my in laws where it was not watered almost daily for weeks about 98% died. Those two yards were St. Augustine and Centipede.
They have a new seeding method here a good friend of mine used where the seeds are coated that did real well for him with bermuda and he water it twice a day on his sand hill. Funny, guess how the new sod farms are planting, using that same method. ....

Tom
I have Centipede. I bought a pallet and split the flats down the middle length wise. I put them in a line 2 1/2 feet apart came back with the second line 3 1/2 feet from the first and placed them to fill the gap from the first line. I continued on with this until complete. I did this with my 10 year old son (dirt digger) and my 13 year old dauther (sod woman) I was (sod cutter). Soften up the ground and lay the Centipede and stomp. This is a french method Lay-stomp. I seeded with rye, and fescue just to hole the soil. Water often, 10-10-10 fert. before you plant. South Ga. sandy loam is great for Centipede. Any more questions I will be here. this is the pattern.
