Does anyone know of a walk behind spreader that can be used with wet sand? I see lots that can be used for dry sand, but nothing for wet sand...

Thanks!

No, and there's a real good reason too.

Sanders are typically used in the winter for ice control. Ice being the key word. In freezing weather 'wet' sand quickly becomes 'frozen' sand.

There are several types of motorized sanders which will handle damp or even frozen sand, but they are heated boxes with some form of mechanical agitation, either a stirring mechanism or vibrator. A walk-behind can't do this, even if it could you would need a linebacker to push it.

Best of luck. ....

The other big problem with wet materials is bridging. Wet sand depending how much -200 material is in it packs very hard. It do not like the hopper type spreaders.

The older push spreaders 24-30" wide with the drop out the bottom holes and a rotating shaft to feed the material might work better.

If you keep your sand out side and frozen you can spike the pile with calicum or mix in salt and that will help keep it workable. ....

I doubt from the responses thus far that it will matter, but by wet sand I mean salted sand. I get it for free at the local DPW where there is a shed full of sand that people can do help themselves. I put the sand in a garbage can and store it in my garage. Before I posted the question here I had a brainstorm and tried putting the sand in my grass seed spreader -- it did not work so well... ....

The hiway dept. used to have sand barrels along the road at hills and intersections. I'd totaly forgotten about them till reading this post. Do any states still do that? I think they were meant for truckers to refill their wheel sanders. I haven't seen them on trucks for years. Frank. ....
