I have a TC33D and presently a 72 inch side discharge RFM. I was considering trading for a new one with rear discharge, to get rid of the windrowing I get when the grass gets a little too far ahead of me. But now I am thinking what about an 84 inch?

The 84's have larger tires (smoother?) and there is a possibility I may go to a larger tractor, so buying a little larger now would mean it would cover the tracks of a larger tractor. But that is probably a year away.

My questions are:
Does anyone out here have a TC33 or similar size with 84 inch RFM? Is it too big regarding PTO power needed, or too heavy, or more awkward? Does scalping become a huge problem with the extra foot width? Anything else I should consider?

Any input would be appreciated.

PTO hp wise, the TC33 will run the 84" RFM but may run into hp problems in heavier grass. The larger the mower, usually increases the tendency to scalp but a good mower with properly placed and designed anti-scalp/floatation wheels should minimize this. Something else to consider is that belts don't always slip like you would think they would, so I would suggest a slip clutch. ....

Mike, there will be a considerable amount of money involved in taking a loss on your present mower, and then paying the extra for a new mower, why not look at other alternatives.

You might find for example, that you can pick up a collections system for a similar cost.

The collection system will however help with other things like spring and fall clean-ups, leaves, etc.

Just a thought.

Best of luck. ....

I have an 84" rear discharge finish mower that I bought with my JD 3320...about the same size as your TC33 I believe. Our lawn has some rolling hills, but is graded pretty well. I've always mowed with the deck high because we don't water the lawn, and it seems to get through the summer without turning as brown better that way. So it doesn't scalp at our place, but certainly could on the wrong lawn, or if you like cutting it short. If you're using a 72" now, maybe that won't be a problem. It's nice having the extra width to get closer to things. The tractor has no problem running it in normal grass. It mows foot long stuff without much trouble. Mine is the Frontier, built by Woods. ....
