I currently mow about 2 acres. 1 acre is flat and smooth. The other has some very small hills, but also has small tree stumps, limbs, sticks, etc. I have never purchased a tractor, so I need some advice. I am looking at a used 1988 (I think) 27 hp JD950 with a 6 foot rotary mower. I've got a call in to the dealer to get more details. My current questions are: 1) Do I need more horsepower, or is 27 enough. 2) Will I be fine using it in 90 - 100 heat? 3) Is 27 hp enough to pull a 6 ft. brush hog? a manure spreader? 4) The JD dealer is asking $5,500 for both. Should I be suspicious? Is that a good price?

I think a LOT goes to your feelings about the seller. Is he trustworthy ? clean shop ? Good service and parts dept ? Does the hour meter work and how many are on it ? Personally that seams like a HUGE machine for two acres. Do you really need a 6' brush hog with two acres ? I would think this machine should handle it with ease. ....

a 6 footer will work but I think the tractor would run a 5 ft better, especially if what your mowing is thick and tall. ....

Thanks for your input. I'll check the hour meter on Monday. I actually have just over 26 acres total, but I have someone that hays about 20 acres. I wanted to make sure that I have something to pull my manure spreader out in the 20 acre field. In addition, I have another acre that is overgrown with grass and some brush that I'd like to knock down. (I probably should have put all that in my original post!) The main reason I ask is that about two weeks ago a friend said I should probably look for a 35 - 40 hp tractor. I just didn't know how much of a difference a 27 hp would make as opposed to 35 hp. What do you think? No, I probably don't need a 6 footer, but I currently don't have anything and the dealer would like to sell the tractor and rotary mower together because he got them together on a trade in. I'm sure he'd sell me the tractor only and a smaller brush hog if a asked. Thanks in advance! ....

The JD 950 is 27 PTO HP.
The gross engine HP is in the low 30's.
It should run a 6' cutter without to much trouble !! ....

I would agree. I think this machine is totally adequite for what you want to do. Its hard to comment on price without knowing the details. Just make sure you test drive it play with the rock shaft. I tend to shy away from those with fresh paint. ....

I tested my 955 with a 6 ft last year, 27 PTO it is certainly enough as long as you are not clearing a lot of small trees. I took it though thick wet fiscue had not problem. ....
