I'm a guest here so excuse me if I bruise protocol
I have a borrowed Kubota 2550.
I was using it to move some loam the other day and suddenly lost all forward and reverse capability.
My Buddy whom i borrowed it from said it had been dripping some transmission fluid recently.

So far I have done the following:
Refilled the transmission (which took about 20 quarts)

Tested with all possible drive configurations (to eliminate the stupidity factor)

Checked the bottom side for anything which might have become disconnected.

The Kubota dealer (Larry at East Elliot Garage in Elliot, Maine) said the clutch is probably gone but given that it happened with none of the usual signs of a worn clutch ($1500.00), I am wondering if it is possibly something else...........and hopefully something cheaper.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob Crowley

If this is a GST model and you had to add that much oil then chances are the wet clutch for sure is gone. You would not know it was going unless you caught it just right to slip under load. I'm amazed the loader would move or lift for being that low. ....

"My Buddy whom i borrowed it from said it had been dripping some transmission fluid recently."

"Refilled the transmission (which took about 20 quarts)"

First of all, that is some drip.

Second of all are you SURE he's a 'buddy' of yours.

Finally, is there any chance he was looking for someone to buy him a new clutch?

Did you steal his best girl in high school or anything like that?

Best of luck.

Murf I always enjoy your insight! I didn't want to get into the value of some friends, or where they fit into the lives of those around them! ....

Art, I'm not sure 'insight' is the correct term, certainly my good lady would argue the point, but I certainly do 'calls 'em as I see's 'em', always have, always will.

Best of luck. ....

Thanks for the reply....He's is a very good friend of mine but this is his first tractor and he doesn't know jack about maintaining this type of equipment also........I don't know how LONG this little drip has been occuring but I suspect it's in the months range.

Also....just to ease the collective mind, he is not expecting me to pay for this.
I'm just trying to help him gain some knowledge before he walks into a repair shop.

OK Bob, now that makes more sense.

The GST is Kubota's version of a 'shuttle shift' transmission. It has a gear selector on the left fender and a forward/neutral/reverse shifter on the left side of the steering column.

If it has a gear shift lever on the floor between your feet that includes reverse then it is a 'gear' or as Kubota calls it 'DT' transmission.

The fluid the dealer gave you will also tell you if it's a GST or DT model.

Best of luck.

Normally it would say it on the side of the fender or it is on the end of the serial number on the left hand side of the transmission housing. The glideshift you don't need to clutch while shifting and it is nearly straight line. ....

I didn't check the numbers but on the left fender there is a range selector (high, neutral.low), on the left of the steering column is the forward, neutral. reverse lever you spoke of and on the right of the steering column is the gear selector (1, 2, 3, 4) so it must be the "GST".
And did you say this can be shifted without the clutch? This would be good because one of my concerns was that I was shifting forward/reverse with no clutch the same as I would with my Case 350 crawler which has a what Case calls a Power Shuttle transmission.
Thought I might have busted something.

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but the your description sounds like an FST, which does require the use of a clutch.
