Considering a B7100 or B7200 for light mowing and snow removal. Is either one big enough for post hole digger, scraper blade, 3 pt. mower (if so how big) etc. I have larger tractor for field work but want smaller for around house and pasture work. What is the HP of either one? I think only about 18-20?

BrianC -
The B7100 vs. B7200 are considerably different in size. The B7100 is an older vintage unit;i.e: X100 series, started with the B5100, B6100,B7100. The B7200 is in the X200 series, B4200, B5200, B6200, B7200, B8200, B9200, which ultimately came later.

Comparison- B7100, 16HP at 2800rpm,3cyl;
weight - about 1080lbs
B7200, 17HP at 2500rpm,3cyl;
weight - about 1250lbs

Having had both series, both are excellent units. However, as your post mentioned, you wish to do post hole digging. The B7100 is somewhat smaller framed than that of the B7200. The post hole digging operation will be much more noticable from a bouncing around standpoint with the B7100 vs. the B7200.

The B7200 is 17 HP at the engine, 14 at the PTO. These are with manual transmission because that's all they had.

B6200 is 15 engine, 12.5 PTO
B5200 is 13 engine, 11.5 PTO

That doesn't sound like much power but remember, all the old full size farm tractors of the 1940's and 50's like the Ford gray and Farm-All tractors were lucky to have 15 horse. The modern tractors with 40 horse are a recent thing, never mind these ridiculous 200 horse monstrosities of today. ....

willie,Morgan,
Thanks, I am working w/ limited funds and trying to get the most bang for the buck. The 7100 is older but has overhauled engine and hydraulic blade. The 7200 is newer but more money and no implements. ....

BrianC. -
Let's compare...
1) What is the serials of each?
2) How many hours on each?
3) How much more is the price on the B7200 vs.B6100?
4) What other ideas does your yard have in mind for you to do in the future? The B6100 may be too small.
5) Turfs or Ags ?

Willie,
B7100 has 2000 hours and near new ag tires (which I do want) ser# 4883 (that is what dealer gave me, does it sound right?)
B7200 has only 434 hours and ag tires that show some heavy use. Ser #62048.
I grew up on farm so am familiar with hours etc on larger tractors but never really got into the compact stuff.
There is about 1500.00 difference between the two.
I have John Deere 2030 for heavier work so I really dont need larger tractor right now, also I am trying to stay out of the financing for a while. 2-3 years and I will be looking at something larger and newer.
Thanks ....

Those small tires are cheap. New 8 X 16 ags are $100 each at www.macfaddens.com Don't let that be the deciding factor. Why does this thing truncate my posts? ....

Brian -
You did not say whether or not the oranges were gear shift or Hydrostatic, as orange had a B7100HST from 1980-1999, and the B7200HSD from 1984-1995. I am going to guess that these BOTH are gear shift units. With this in mind, the serial for the B7100 is missing some digits at best. I think perhaps either this was a reintroduced HSD model vintage, hence starting over with lower numbers as found in 1990 vintage HSD units, or the dealer gave you his stock number rather than a serial number.

As far as the B7200, the serial on this one is complete for the last five digits. It is id'd as a 1985-1986 vintage.

If the overall condition of these units are good, meaning mechanical as well as tin work & paint, for the little difference in cost, the advantage would be with the B7200, for several reasons. 1) physically larger tractor, 2) newer tractor vintage, 3) higher resale value, as you pointed out, potentially later on down the road...,etc. The fact that the rear tires are somewhat worn by comparison, you can put a pair of aggressive light truck tires on it for a fraction of the cost of Ags, or merely put on a set of chains on the higher wear tires, depending on what your needs of traction are. Depending wher you look, these replacement tires are had quite affordably - just NOT at an orange dealer.

If you have any additional info., pass it along

I guess at this point, the ball is in your court as to what you decide on. Personally, having had both series, I prefer and lean towards the B7200, for the reasons that I listed before, plus the fact that I am a tall guy. Over time, the 7100 gets tight on me, whereas the 7200 offers considerably more leg room and height up from seat.
Your choice - Good Luck

BrianC.-

If you compare the two side by side, you'll notice that the two are actually pretty close in width and hood height. However, the proof of difference is in the separation distance between the dash and the seat, along with the seat height and style. With the B7200, you will realize a comfortable ride, by comparison, with the advantage of a larger, softer seat, an increased distance from dash to seat, as well as increased height of seat off the "floor".
Being 6'4" myself, I can relate.

Brian C, I have a 1997 B7100HST and I stand 6'2". I do not feel cramped on the tractor. In fact, I feel quite comfortable. Willie H's extra 2" might be just enough to make it feel too small. But I haven't compared it to a B7200 to really notice the size difference. Get on the tractors and see how they feel for you. Although I would lean more towards the 7200 because of the hour difference. Or, if you are interested, my B7100HST is for sale. ....

rrudd28 -

As they say, "size does make a difference"...seriously though, as you pointed out, your tractor is an HST, not a gear shift unit as Brian C. mentioned. The Gear shift B7100 is about 6 - 8 inches shorter than the same unit in gear shift variety. That difference is made up in the center transmission tube dimension, thus making the B7100HST longer, and more roomy by comparison. Hence the reason for my initial assessment, the B7200 is a bigger variety to begin with, that of which is comparable (in length) to a B7100 HST, not gear.

WillieH:
Good observation. I never really thought about the fact that the hst's have more space than the gear shifts. I guess I just took the extra space for granted. Not to mention the fact that there is no reaching down to play with the stick shift between the legs either. hahaha. You seem to be knowledgeable. What kind of price range should I be in for selling my tractor? 1997 B7100hst 645 hours. Woods 1006 loader. Kubota rc60 belly mower. Bar turfs. I'd rate it a 7.5 to 8 out of 10 in condition.

Thanks guys,
One more question, I saw an L2200 for sale in local swap sheet. It was listed as a 4WD. I know its more HP than the B7100 but didnt they only come in 2WD? I dont have any serial #s or anything so I cant say for sure.

Are you sure that it wa a "L2200" ? Perhaps a typo on the sheet or something...Maybe an L200, this was a 2wd unit. Or, the obvious typo, a B2200, but this comes in 4wd as well.

Maybe if it is an L2201, it can be 4wd, but then it will also be grey market tractor. Or if it was supposed to say L2002, it would also be same situation. Or maybe it was supposed to be L2500, in which case it comes in 2wd or 4wd. At any rate, I don't know of a 4wd L2200, just 2wd. But then again, you never know. Some help that is huh? ....
