I plan to trade my JD4300 on a new 4600 hydro with MFWD. I would like to hear from 4600 owners about any problems. I plan on ordering with the 72" midmount mower. Does anyone on the board have this combination. Let me know. I value your input.

Terry,

Why are you going up to the 4600? Just curious....I have a 4600 powereverser with 210 hours on it. I absolutely love it. I had a problem with the hydraulic control valve. The dealer put a brand new one on it, and it works right now. Also, why did you decide on the hydro instead of the 12 speed?

Noticing 4600 users here. I have also just posted to a few of the other section on this list. I am interested in moving from the 855 (19hp @ pto) to the 4600 (36 hp @ pto) My JD dealer have several that were used in gondola use at vinyards with less than 100 hrs. I will be adding 4 in one bucket with tilt and top on the 3 point and a 72" scraper box with the manual drop-out riper teeth.

My question any concerns for this tractor? What is the 4700? How does in compair to the 4600? And someone mentioned the 5105 what is the pto hp and is there a real difference in the two? I am limited to my pulling the tractor weight because of the trailer and truck to pull it. So I have to limit the tractor to probably the 4600 because but it is the most practical tractor to my needs.

Mark, 5105 is a Utility tractor..not a compact. A few $$ less than a 4600 or 4700 but more HP and larger frame. 40-45 PTO hp. I've seen a 4600 and 4700 side by side, the 4700 appears the same size but has a bigger 4cyl engine than the 4600. Also, the 4700 comes standard w/PoweReverser Trans and MFWD. I love my 4600 but if the 5105 was out I probably would have grabbed it because of the greater power (3000 lbs vs 1750 lbs in the loader) and the larger 'hoe you can get w/5000 series (I have the 48 hoe). Have fun shopping... ....

I talked to my jd dealer today. The capacities are very close between the 4600 and the 5105. There was a 1000 lb weight increase in going to the 5105 though and 4 hp pto. I was cheaper by quite a bit then the 4600 new but I am looking at the 4600 with some hours on it. Approx. $18,000 vs the $24,000 or maybe it was $22,000 for the 5105. The 5105 does not take the 4 in 1 bucket which I want. However that bucket is smaller then the 5105 bucket by about a foot (60 something vs 72") the power reverser is nice on the 4600 for loader work too! The utility tractor of the 5105 is more real tractor stuff without the frills. Again though the 5105 take me closer to the 7,000 weight limit of my trailer. Not a big deal probably but the 5105 has 3 cyl and the 4600 4 cyl. Hey more choices the more confussing. Kicking tires is pretty fun and the power difference in that in my 855 will be a whole world of difference. I have a bite on my 855 now too! We'll see...maybe that 4600 is getting just a little bit closer to reality.

I was looking at the JD brochure that shows the lifting of the 4600's 460 loader. It shows that the force is 3863 lb/ft breakout force and 2325 lbs lift capacity to max height. The borchure I had for the 5105 did not show a lift capacity that I saw.

Also to the group here...Has anyone used their 4600 or 4500 for any riping, pulling equipment disks etc...through the soil?? I was interested in how the tractor pulls. Has anyone added weights, water in the tires and how much actual was the tractors weight increased to?

I did go down to my JD dealer and ask about the 5105. I would be approximately $6,000 more for the 5105 ($24,000) over the 4600 ($18,000). So I can add some of the options I wanted to the 4600. I can not at this time consider the extra dollars for 4 more hp, the extra weight and larger tractor. Any other thoughts about this comparison to help me.

Any other options that others have put on this tractor that would be of benifit?
Someone had mentioned about valving. Is there a type or manufacture of valving to watch out for or is this strictly JD parts and which ones were they.

How difficult is it to set up work lights to the rear that can be switch seperatly to the running lights?

Has anyone used the loan program? Any comments about being pleased problems?

I just need some other experienced help here to assist my decision. It appears that I just sold my 855. So next week (hopefully) they'll trade cash and get a tractor in return. I will likely deliver it (after I go to the bank). I will hopefully have made my decision so when I go into the JD dealer I will know I have made the best decision.

Thanks to this list!!!

Thanks

The implements I have for my 4600 are:
6' disk
6' straight blade
7' bush hog
6' box blade

I put a 35 gallon water tank on the disk, to make it weigh about 900 lbs. I can lower it to its deepest position (about 6" disking depth) and pull it just fine with the 4600(even through muddy spots). It handles all of those implements well. I have 210 hours on it, and the hydraulic control valve was replaced because it wouldn't 'float' properly. That is the only problem I have had. If you get the powereverser, I DEFINATELY recommend the creeper option.

Mark, lift on the 540 loader is around 3,000 lbs, depending on the configuration. A 5105 is cheaper than a 4600 and if I were buying again I would get it. There is really no comparison between a compact and a utility. I like the idea of a genuine JD engine in the 5000 rather than the imported engine in the 4000 series. Don't get me wrong..I think the 4600 is the best of the compacts but it is just soooooo close to the 5105 in price that if I were going new it would be a no brainer for me..if was 6k more like your deal is, well that is a different story...I do love my 4600, I work it hard almost to the point of abuse and it just keeps on going...have fun shopping ....

I've been comparing the prices and features of the 4600/4700 vs th 5105/5205 tractors. The JD info I have says that I can only use a 521 loader on the 5n05 tractors. If you compare the 521 performance on a 5n05 vs a 5n10 tractor the 10 s have higher performance. The 5n05+521 vs the 4n00+JD460 comparison the 4n00 win. Price wise the tractors are similar when outfitted with comparable equipment at least from the two dealers I have talked with I think jdlawns and www.4turf.com work out roughly the same as well. The backhoes from JDs are another story as well. The JD48 for a 4600/5700 is roughly 7,000 installed while the JD10A for the 5n05 is about $10,200. A big jump in price....

These are really tough choices between these tractors.

Hope this helps...

Compact -VS- utility

I own both, a 4400 and a 5205. You may have noticed my previous posts where I am extremely unhappy with the 4400. I have had a lot of trouble with it. I have grumped that I will never own another Deere Compact

But - I gotta give credit where credit is due. I purchased the 5205 (MWFD) in Nov. 2001 with the intent of using it to spread manure, rake hay, pull wagons, bush hog (I have a MX 7) and other "utility" type chores.

I cant tell you how pleasently suprised I was with the tractor and used it for my 9' Case IH mower conditioner, Case IH 8430 round bailer and JD 336T square bailer - as well as the other stuff I intended it for.

I put 300 hours on the tractor last year - putting up over 200 800 lb round bales and 3,000 square bales, moco and raked over 150 acres of hay and used the Deere rotary mower to maintain over 80 acres of pasture. Its a dam little work horse.

I did not get a loader or hoe as I have one those on the 4400, however I would like to sell the 4400 and go to the larger loader and hoe. Yes - they cost more, but, they are heavier and you can do a bit more with them.

I did put 4 weights on the front and load the tires. I work several side hills and these made a huge difference.

Hope this helps your decision - feel free to drop a note

I have a 4700. Midmount mower has advantages, but it can't be used if you intend to reverse the front and rear wheels for wider wheelbase (gauge wheels on mower are in the way). I mow hillsides, so need the stability.
4700 is the largest/most HP tracter I could find with hydrostatic trans.
With 2x100 rear wheel weights and FEL, it comes to apprx 5500 lbs. The weight allows me to transport with a car-hauler trailer (wheels just clear the side rails). The utes weight much more, making them hard to trailer.
I like it overall a lot, but the ergonomics of the NH Boomer series (eg. 45D) are very attractive -- many features that JD should have thought of. JD has dropped a few onto the updated 4x10 series, but not enough.

It in interesting you brought the NH into the conversation as you are correct. The price for the NH which comes with alot more addons by default compared to the JD is a real deal maker. The JD 10 series has some changes although to add all the changes up in cost from what I can see currently puts the price well over a comparible NH boomer. ....

I just purchased a 4600 HST with 460FEL and 48 hoe. I moved up from my 1960 JD430W. I am very pleased thus far and look forward to using this tractor in my landscape business this year. I also use it around the house as we have 13 acres of woods that we are continuously cleaning up after we had it harvested for timber. I will visit this site again as I use the tractor more. I may have to go to a wider box blade as my current one is only 66".

With the price that those JD430W are bringing it must have paid for some of that new tractor. That's a very collectable model. It is nice to think that a guy could have bought that tractor brand new in 1960, used it for 40 years, and probably sold it at a profit. With any luck, we will be doing the same thing 40 years from now. ....
