I just bought a John deere 2630.
I have ordered all the manuals I could find on EBAY.
And am looking for any that comes up.
I already have a shop manual.
Problem:
We just had 10" of snow and had a chance to try the tractor out. When one of my rear wheels started to spin I stepped on the differental lock pedal. It woud not move.
After I got done I tried to budge the differental lock pedal and it broke where it goes on the shaft.
After examaning it It was already broke two third of the way before because the break was black and not shiny.
I expect to get a new one, but because it is Saturday afernoon and nothing to loose I welded it back together.
When I tried to put it back on the shaft I found that there
isn't enough room to slip it on the shaft.
Does anyone know how to do it besides taking it to the dealer?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the base problem might mean a frozen shaft or difflock assy. Many times I have seen where they have set up from not being used. ....

Thank you for your Reply.
What I would like to know is how to unfreeze it.
Also remember that the pedal's hole was 2/3 broken prior to my
breaking it when I tried to free it up.
Plus I need to buy a new pedal and I need to know how to put that pedal on the shaft.
There is not enough room to slide it on.
Can the shaft be pushed back or beaten back with a copper/brass bar far enough to slide the pedal on?
Or does the rear end need to be taken apart?
If so than is this a job for JD service?
....

The shaft you are trying to free up is about a foot long. If you look at the rear of the tractor in a straight line back from the front of the shaft, you will see a freeze plug type of plug that closes the bore in the housing. I have never attempted to replace the pedal without removing the final drive, but it may be possible. I would drill a hole in the freeze plug and pop it out. Then using a punch, drive the shaft as far forward as you can. Clean up the exposed shaft with emery cloth or sandpaper. spray some penetrating oil on the shaft and then tap it back in the housing only as much as neccasary to get on the new pedal. The only danger here is that there is a woodruff key inside the housing that could get out of place if you drive the shaft back too far. If that happens, you will have no choice but to remove the final drive to get the key back into place. It is not that difficult to do if you have a way to handle the wheel assembly and the final drive assembly. If you clean the shaft well and use plenty of penetrating oil,it should free up nicely. just be sure to not peen over the end of the shaft while driving it forward and back. A brass punch works best. Be sure to replace the freeze plug when you finish. It keeps dirt and water out of the transmission and holds the oil in. Good Luck! ....

First of all I thank all that have responded and tried to help. The only time I would need for the differential lock
to work is when I plow snow on my property. I have an 800 foot driveway and a large parking area. My previous tractor was a Ford Jubelee and it did not have this option.
So I was looking forward to trying it when my wheels started
to spin going backwards up hill. Today I ordered tirechains called Dou Grip.
This I hope will help with some or most of the spinning problem.

Having done all that what will I gain if I have the tractor taken into the dealer to have this problem Fixed?

I don't think I want to take the tire off myself, it is full
of fluid, I work on cars but I don't have equipment to lift that much weight.

Also How much can the fix cost approximately?

If I can use the tractor to my satisfaction withouth fixing this problem
than might there be another reason that I am not aware of that this should be fixed? (This is my first JD)
Thank you all for the information? ....

You have stepped up quite a bit but diff locks are nice. I'd say you might have to look at four digits at a dealer and less at other repair shops. You might find that some constant attention with penetration oil might overcome the problem if it is at the outer shaft bushings. ....

Thanks for the reply.
I have been soaking it with penetrating oil already.
So far no result.
Can I apply heat with a welding torch to the shatf or the tractor housing withouth hurting anything? ....

I would try a heat gun first. Less chance of a fire or burning something up. Can you get any type of a long drift punch or bar in there to try and gently tap on the sliding collar. You may be able to break it loose this way. ....

I am embarrassed to keep on asking so many questions about this problem.
Yes, I devised a brass punch for my air gun and gently tried to hammer it with that without pushing to hard. I will soak it and hammer it from time to time to see if it will do something. I do not want to actualy move the shaft as the pictures in the shop manual show that it has woodruff key that might fall out. The shaft also is embeded
at the back side where the freeze pug is and it might be stuck there also? Then if I manage to loosen the shaft then I will still have the problem of how to put the pedal back
since there is not enough room between the end of the shaft and the body of the tractor to slide on. These are the problems and this is why I am looking for suggestions from all of you, the experienced with JD tractors.
Art tought that JD service might ask a four figure amount to fix this. I don't think I want to go there.
Thanks again for putting up with me. ....

Call this phone number 1-800-726-7172 and ask for Jimmy in the Service Department. Explain the problem you are having and I am sure Jimmy can offer some help and experience. If not, I am sure he will get one of the mechanics to come to the phone. If it turns out you need parts; ask for my buddy Ricky in the parts department (he is the manager there) tell him Randy sent you. Ricky offers a discount to any of the forum members I send to him. This is the Deere dealer that I have dealt with for 3 years now and they are great folks to deal with. VERY helpful and great prices to boot. ....

pszikszai, if you haven't done so already; I would also suggest that you jack up the rear end of the tractor so that at least one tire can spin freely and allow the differential lock to engage properly and freely should you get the linkage to work. Even on a properly functioning differential lock it is nearly impossible to get it to engage and actuate properly unless one tire is spinning. I usually have to try mine a few times while one tire moves slowly. ....

The whole problem started when the pedal was stuck and broke while trying to unstick it. I was broken 2/3 of the way by the previous owner. A new pedal can't be put on unless I drive the shaft 1 and 1/2" forward, which I dare not do for the possibility of droping the woodruff key inside the Axle.
I resolved this problem by taking a piece of metal 5" long 1 and 1/2" wide and the other side 1" wide.
I drilled a 5/8 hole in the 1 1/2 side and two holes
in the 1" side.
I the sawed the 1 and 1/2 inch side in half for the length.
I tapped the the two smaller holes to 5/16.
Mounted the two pieces with the 5/8 holes on the differential lock shaft and tightened on using the 5/16 tapped hoels. It is already working. I just need to weld a small pedal on it and buy a can of green paint.
Thank you all for the help again. ....
