Looking at a "79" dsl. 950 2200hrs. w/ Schwartz FEL and 505 5'rotary mower. Buyer has the lot insured for 6700.00 and is having an auction guy and a dealer appraise. Auction guy says $3500.00, dealer(friend)hasn't looked yet.
Think this is a yanmar dsl. Any thing I need to be wary of with this year/model/engine?? Price??

We've got a 950 that my father bought new in about 1982 and it's been a great tractor. Hasn't seen alot of use with only 450 hours. 2wd with no power steering and no FEL. Seems to have more power than it can put to the ground, but don't have any rear wheel weights. Basically have only had to put batteries in it over the years from lack of use. The engine and drivetrain have virtually been flawless and overall, it seems to be a tough, well-built tractor. I would recommend one to anybody. Hope this helps.

That is correct. The "50" series compacts all were offered in diesel only. They were excellent tractors. If they are maintained properly, you can realistically expect to get 8-10,000 hours out of these engines before overhaul. The only thing I would be wary of is the clutch. If the clutch is bad, it can cost as much as $2500.00 to replace. Be sure to check out the clutch operation before you buy. Make sure it does not slip under load and that you can engage the pto without scraping the gears with clutch fully depressed. If clutch operation is questionable, keep in mind price of repair when negotiating the price. ....

There was an option for dealer installed power steering. The kits are not available any more, but you might check around at some salvage yards to see if you could find a used one. ....

Yes, there are tractor salvage yards. I see from your profile that you are from Iowa. There is a large on out there at www.rvtractorparts.com/. You could also check with your dealer to see if they could recommend someone. ....
