I am considering trading my JD-445 w?60" mower deck for a new JD4200or JD-4300. Can anyone tell me if it is worth the extra money to get the JD-4300. I plan to go from a 60" to 72" mower deck. I have about 5 acres, and do mowing, aerating, fertilizing, etc; I am new to the jplan website and enjoy it. Joe - Iowa

I just purchased a 4200 4x4 HST with turfs, a 420 loader and a 272 rear finish mower. I have 4 flat acres and was told it would pull any of this equipment without a problem. Tractor will be delivered tomorrow (Friday) where we will begin the real test. The 4300 was a little larger in size and weight but the price was about $1700.00 more. You do gain an extra 5.5 pto horsepower with only a 225 pound weight increase that should make for a more powerful unit overall. the only problem with the 4300 is it wont fit in my garage. Price for the 4200 equipped above was $18300.00 ....

My search started with a 4300..but only having 2 acres pushed me to the 4100. But, I were to be in the market for a unit of that size, the 4300 would be choice over the 4200. Size difference is minimal between the 4200 and 4300. However, like my present situation, I'm looking to rent a power rake for redo'ing the lawn..WELL, Guess who also has to rent a bigger HP tractor, only 1 year after buying a 20hp compact!! IMHO, the little extra $ is worth it to me...especially when comparing tractors of VERY similar size. I've always felt it was a big size jump between the 4100 & 4200,..yet minimal between the 4200 & 4300. Seems Yanmar should have made the 4200 a tad smaller in size, to equal out the size jump. ....

I'm assuming you are looking at MFWD models. The 4300 has a longer wheelbase by 3 inches. A 72 inch deck can be used on a 4200 but the front tires may contact the deck in a sharp turn. This won't happen on the 4300. In addition, the 4300 has substantially more power and a size large front and rear tires. I would go for the 4300. ....

It seems that this topic has been visited before, but Yanmar does not make the 4200-4300-4400 series of JD compact diesel tractors (they are assembled by JD in Georgia with parts from various vendors, including Yanmar for the engines) whereas the 4100 is imported from Yanmar in Japan. ....

Joe,the jump between the 4300 and 4400 is very minimal (a bit more hp for the 4400) but the jump between the 4200 and 4300 is a bit more involved. Consider your usage regarding hydraulics. The 4200 hydraulics operate at 2125psi with a 7.3gpm implement pump vs 2500psi/8.3gpm for the 4300/4400. The 4200 has a 1700lb hitch lift capacity vs 2200lb (a difference of 500lb!) for the 4300/4400. The SyncReverser transmission is not available on the 4200. If you plan on using a loader or backhoe you might consider the 4300 because of the hydraulics. The 4200 also has smaller tires than the 4300/4400, which would add up to less weight if the tires are filled. Nothing wrong with the 4200, but I think the 4300 is worth the extra money if you'll be using much hydraulics. ....

I was looking at the same tractor (4200) when I first started shopping last June. I've since become the proud owner of a JD4400HST/4WD for the same reasons as the other people responding to this thread. I was after the most tractor I could purchase (HP/weight), without jumping physical size too much. I looked at the available attachments also, namely the 430 loader. I have never looked back on my decision with regret. Good luck in making your choice. Joe, put me in the same boat with Dennis. Started 6 months ago absolutely in love with the Kubota 2710, decided it was too lightweight, seriously considered the JD 4200 and NH TC25D, then decided I really wanted more hp and weight, seriously considered the Kubota L3410 and JD 4300, ended up cutting a deal this morning on a JD 4400 HST 4WD with 430 loader and 48 backhoe. I'm comfortable now that I'm buying the best machine for me. The best advice is what is repeated on this board all the time: consider YOUR needs and uses carefully, study the choices, then drive the different models to see what YOU are most comfortable with. I'm convinced that you can't make a poor choice between JD, Kubota, and NH in terms of the machines and the manufacturer's commitment to the market. It comes down to what is best for you. ....

I bought a 4200 hystat 4wd in November with 420 loader, 72 inch belly mower, and
45 rear blade. I like the tractor very much,and it does everything I wanted
(haven't mowed yet). I have observed that it is underpowered for roading. I
cannot fully depress the hystat pedal in c range without lugging the engine
rpm's down below pto speed on any slope whatsoever. This isn't a big deal to
me since I'm not roading it more than on a 1500' driveway.
I'd also like to point out that drawbar pull is a function of tractor weight and tire traction, not horsepower. Higher horsepower does not let you pull more load, since I believe by design all tractors can spin their wheels in 1st gear.
More horsepower does let you drive faster, though. This can
be important to how fast you can drive while pulling the load.

Joe I purchaseed A JD 4200 HST 60in belly mower, used it one day and called my dealer up and told him I was not pleased with the power, I've a small hill in my yard and when running the belly mower, cutting short grass the tractor rpms would drop off, so he aloud me to trade it back in on A 4400 HST 72in belly mower. I am very pleased with the power, if were in your shoes I would go for the 4300 or 4400, my two MPO. ....
