Dealer has counteroffered: 2000 JD 4300/hydro/550hrs/ 4wd/72mmm/turf tires and will sell used 430FEL all for $16700. The tractor and loader are in excellent shape. The dealer offers very good service. Should I bite on this offer?
Should I worry about traction with turf tires? I will be mowing 60% of the time, and doing grading and loader work 40% of the time. I guess I could try to find some front tire chains for doing really muddy FEL work, or hauling manure.

Doesn't sound too bad. I would ask the dealer if he could swap a set or R-4 tires onto this machine and see what he says. The turfs are actually a good bit more expensive and are not all that bad traction wise unless you really get into the muck. If the dealer bites on the R-4 offer, tell him to fill the rear tires with "Rim Gard" you will need it with a FEL. ....

Another owner had a 4300 and it kept bogging down when mowing with his 72"mower. He traded for a 4400 and has no power concerns. Anyone else noticed this? Should I set my eyes on trying to locate a 4400? I've noticed their used prices are close to the 4300. ....

You did not note hydro or syncro.

I would not be concerned about turf tires. I have them and go pretty much where I want. Not much goes thru muck.

If hydro price sounds ok, not exceptional.
If syncro it might be a tad high.

Keep in mind these little tractors are in very high demand so that drives the price also.

How many brand new ones on his lot? how many used? ....

The 4400 offer 3 more hp and a little less than 10% more torque. Unless the prices of a comparably equipped 4400 came up closly priced; I don't think the extra price paid (at least new) is justified for the 4400. My preference would be for the 4400 if the price is right but the 4300 should perform the same in all but the most taxing of applications. ....

Harvey, I was wondering where you bought your tire chains. How much do a front pair or rear pair cost? The 2000 4300 is a hydro, and seems overpriced by about $1000 when reviewing the Outdoor Power Equipment Offical Guide. However, the machine is in good shape. I may think it over for a while. Had my heart set on a 4400 with R4's. I also like the new 300cx/300x loaders on these used tractors. But the 430 is a great FEL. We will wait and see what pops up on machinerylink. Would prefer to buy in town. ....

I run a 72 inch rear finish mower that is old haggard and dull. I cannot even turn the driveshaft by hand to allign for attachment, and when the gearbox oil ran out, I just pumped it half full of grease. My 4300 has no bogging problems, rather the belt stops moving and starts smoking if I get too fast for the 12 inch high grass I often mow. Chains are a touchy situation on these models. I had to custom make mine and clearance is extremely tight. Also the sharpest of right turns are to be avoided as the chains will hit the cylinder. A set of cable chains for limited clearance cars may be nice? ....

Chris I made them from a bunch of scrap chains. They have welded links to get the right lenght.

These tires do not turn at highway speed they do not have to be perfect. There is a lot of iron in those chains each one on the rear weights over 100#.

Old Highway Dept truck chains work beautiful and can be traded for in most cases. A couple 4 cans of coffee and donuts are best for trading.

As I said the price does not sound to bad especially if tractor is clean and there are not a lot of used ones in the area. ....

Thanks everyone for the info. I found a dealer who rents 2005 3320's with 4wd/ehydro/r4 to a school system every 6 months. The school uses them for mowing or pushing snow. He sells them with about 100 hours/6months old for about $15500 for the tractor, $2000 for 300x loader, and $1500 for 72"mmm. I may have him save one for me for next March. This seems like a much nicer deal, and I like the look and options of this model compared to 5yr old 4300. ....

I would run from the 4300 at that price. I just sold a like new 4310 435 hours hydro 4 wheel drive R3 tires 430 loader and a 60" mid mount mower for 16,000. The dealers wanted to give me 13,000 and 13,500 and told me that they would sell it for 14,500....YEA RIGHT I also had two 4300 with hydros and one was replaced under warranty because of the thrust washers in the rear. So becareful with the first model 4300 with this problem and also mine would scuff the lawn with front tires and i was told that they improved this on later models.
JMO ....

I would strongly recommend AGAINST the 420 FEL. Get the 430 FEL. It is a much stronger FEL and is more compatable with the 4410 capability wise. If you can get the dealer to throw in the 72" MMM that would be a pretty good deal although I think he may balk. ....

I agree Chief.....the 420 only has about 800lbs lifting capacity, where as the 430 is twice that or better. That's why I was trying to get the MMM also. Thanks. ....
