Last summer Van played in Germany with Sam Butera. Sam was Luis Prima's legendary sideman--and is still performing.

Both Van and Sam are legendary at least among musicians. But if you're not a musician and have heard of Sam them then you're really showing your age. Van is the man of a hundred albums and still mostly known for one hit. Sidemen are never stars but Sam came close. Both are likely to be played and imitated for centuries. Wish I could have heard them together.

Well, if you're starved for pop music that actually has some excitement and where the musicians actually learned to play before their careers were over then check out Louis Prima's 'The Wildest Revisited,' a Capital CD. It's a mixture of swing, dixie and early 50's rock. It rocked then and still rocks--especially given what we've got for pop these days. Now I'll try to get back to tractors. ....

A sad state of affairs.......

WHAT are they teaching kids in history classes these days?

I was at a garage sale over the weekend (at gunpoint I might add) and while "She who sometimes brings home other peoples junk" was browsing the 'wares & I was picking through some antique tools.

Next to me was a fellow, probably in his early forties, who was looking through a box of 45rpm records, standing next to him was his son, a boy of probably 10 years old.

The conversation between them went like this;
Son "Dad, are you almost done I'm bored."
Dad "Just a second I just want to look through these 45's."
Son "45 whats?"
Dad "45 records."
Son "Whats a 45 ?"
Dad "A 45 is a kind of record."
Son "What's a record?"
Dad "An album, you know, a music album. (holds one up for the kid to see)."
Son "Oh, you mean like an antique CD?."
Dad "Go see what your Mother is doing."

Almost as bad as my niece calling the Eagles & Steely Dan "Geriatric Rock"...... Kids, you can't live with them and the law says you can't even sell them......

Best of luck.

Both of my boy's, God bless them, are die hard classic rockers. Freshman in college, and junior in high school. They can't get enough of the good stuff, Zeplin, Jethro Tull, The Who, ACDC, whatever. They listen to progressive rock, but willingly admit that it just isn't as good as the classic bands of the 70's and 80's.

I think their mother did a good job raising the three of us. ....

I probably should not post here as my record collection (4-500 albums)were lost in a fire and I never replaced any but Bruce Cockburn, Alan Parsons and Guess Who. Naturally the sterio and A class amp went with them.
Another fire took out the CDs I had replaced them with. Last Christmas my wife said she wanted to buy a small sterio for for her self. I said why?
I am afraid I always liked artists that played their own music and had something expressed in their lyrics, rather than "fly Robin Fly". In this era it there seems to be a lot of packaged pop. ....

During the week I'm lucky enough to live on the Mississippi between Minnesota and Wisconsin. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful areas in the country. When I play John Fogarty's song "Swamp River Days" from the CD Blue Moon Swamp I'm reminded of the sloughs and channels I explore much of the summer. We might not have the alligators that John has in Louisiana, but we've got plenty of swamp. :-)

AV8R, I live on the Wisconsin side near the bottom end of Lake Pepin near the confluence of the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers in a little town called Nelson.

Every day I drive home from work in Rochester MN and I'm in awe of the beauty of the river valley. I get to see it as I come down the 400 foot bluffs and it makes me realize why I commute for an hour.
