The amount of damage and how wide spread it is just defies the imagination. My thoughts and prayers go out to these folks. At least the folks not involved in the looting and chaos.

note: the website these pics are posted on is flooded with traffic taking a look so be patient and keep hitting reload.

I've been stuck home ill for the past two days. I have to go to the intereet just to get away. The total devastation is enourmous and incomprehendable. Over 1 million people displaced for a long period of time.

Humbling really.

But is a real shame the people that are shooting at rescuers. They are just making it far worse. This is the US not Iraq!! WTF??!! ....

My buddy at work has a son in Baton Rouge. His son had to go home early from work today to protect his family because there are people coming in from New Orleans with guns and taking over vacant/unfinished houses. Unbelieveable! ....

Subject: WHAT I'VE SEEN

What I have seen since Katrina:

The poor and the wealthy hurt by the storm.

Black, white, Hispanic, Oriental and Indian all hurt by the storm.

Christian people giving, giving, giving.

Churches going all out to minister in Jesus' name.

Neighbors going door to door helping one another.

Thugs and hoodlums going door to door looking for someone vulnerable.

Ice and water being fought over as police tried to keep the peace.

People coming up from New Orleans taking over empty houses because shelters are full.

Out of town volunteers coming with food and staying for now a week still serving it.

The Churches all over this part of the country doing what Christians do in a crisis.

The Red Cross doing a great job in the shelters.

The Salvation Army doing a great job in the community.

Four Hundred crewman from everywhere bring back the power to our homes, churches and businesses.

Lines at service stations a block to a mile long.

National Guardsman patrolling the streets of McComb along with Kentucky policemen protecting us from the hoodlums and thugs of McComb, Pike County and New Orleans (the most dangerous city in the world before Katrina.)

Drug dealers working outside shelters.

Doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel working tirelessly, even sleeping in the hospital to do the job God called them to do.

WHAT I HAVE NOT SEEN; (Bet you have noticed this TOO.!!!)

The ACLU setting up a feeding line.

People for the American Way helping in the shelters.

The NAACP doing any work whatsoever.

The American Atheist organization serving meals in the shelters.

Jesse Jackson directing traffic at the gas stations or doing anything except insert racial division, AS USUSAL...

I could go on but you get my message. Its the Christian people with love and compassion who do the work.

The gripers in Congress should come on down and get in line to pass the water and the ice. Are you listening Hillary, Chuck, Teddy and all the sorry loafers we call Senators and Congressmen. They don't have a clue as to what this life is all about here on the Gulf Coast. They just want TV time to boost their own wellfare.

Boy I feel better now.............J

Nice rant! But you do have a good point. The whiners and complainers are doing nothing to help the victims but are working to help themselves. Sad... Sad the REd cross was kept out of New Orleans by the Govenor, yet it's George Bush's fault. I don't get it... ....

Unfortunately; I don't believe it matters what party you belong to. I am beginning to believe a friend who was a town major 25 years ago that stated you could not really follow God and be in politics.

Part of the problem is the mind set that drives a man to get a law degree. Generally it means the man has no technical ability what so ever. Most of us have a fixed opinion on lawyers level of honesty. Why do we think we are more honest when they run for the donkey or the elephant.

I guess I do not understand why President Bush placed a lawyer in charge of FEMMA and then expected anything other than deliberation in a time of crisis. ....

Back on topic NOAA has aerial pictures of the whole coast. A refugee from Long Beach who was staying next door asked me to find the her house and see what was left as she was not allowed home. I used the google earth and the NOAA pictures to find a before and after shot. It took a number of hours to pick through the photos. Pretty disheartening to look at all the mess.
We could tell the walls were up on her house but 2 doors up there was nothing but slabs. I got word today that she found the roof blown off and nothing really left. This is what I told her from my photo work. ....

Latest info: According to military sources, organized gangs from all over the South, as far away as Nashville, came to New Orleans post-flood, equipped with boats and SUV's and automatic weapons to systematically loot the city.

This explains a whole lot of stuff I didn't understand at first, such as why there was so much gun fire (rival gangs) and where all the stuff ended up when most everyone was taken out of town on buses with basically the clothes on their backs.

It also explains why a group of contractors attracted gunfire.... as they were mistaken for a rival gang trespassing on claimed turf. Fortunately the cops and military escorts sent 5 of this crowd to the eternal turf war.

This is not to say that the locals were not also looting, as clearly they were, but the majority of the stuff was done by opportunist criminal types from outside.

Soldiers deployed in New Orleans, recently returned from Iraq, described the first few night there as worse and more dangerous than Baghdad. ....

Got this off the news wire from a local TV station website. It discusses what the National Guard is finding when they do the house to house: large stashes of stolen goods.

NEW ORLEANS -- It was like a modern-day treasure map -- a computerized diagram of neighborhoods with codes marking the addresses where National Guard soldiers came upon caches of goods taken by looters in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"There's probably still loot out there" hidden in various homes, Capt. Gregg McGowan said from his Oklahoma National Guard unit's makeshift headquarters.

"We're not going house-to-house looking for it, but if we find it, we secure it so police can check it."

In the chaos that followed Katrina's flooding, looters targeted everything from grocery stores to gun shops to trendy women's clothing boutiques. Now that the city is mostly empty of civilians, military patrols making house-to-house checks for remaining residents or the dead are finding some of the hiding places for the stolen goods.

New Orleans District Attorney Eddie Jordan said he intends to prosecute as many looters as he can. However, few arrests have been made thus far because authorities have been primarily concerned with reaching stranded residents, Jordan said.

The guardsmen recently thought they had caught a looter coming back into town to load his stash onto a moving truck. Inside his home, the soldiers found automobile parts stacked 8 feet high, a new off-road motorcycle and various electronics, including a video game system with a pawn shop ticket still attached.

But the man told the soldiers he had no idea where the goods came from and that someone else must have broken into his home and stashed them there after he evacuated. Skeptical, the soldiers detained him until police arrived, filled out a report and seized the goods. They took the man's name and address, but did not arrest him.

"You could be technical and say, 'I'm going to book him with possession of stolen property,' but then you have to find out who the owner is, find out whether that person had permission take that property," New Orleans Police Capt. Marlon Defillo said.

"So what we're generally doing is seizing the goods as found property and writing a report."

That way, he explained, authorities can return the goods if they figure out where they came from - rather than holding them as evidence pending the resolution of often drawn-out criminal cases.

In other homes, McGowan's unit found automatic teller machines that had been broken open and emptied of cash and bags of ammunition still packaged in 500-round bundles, not the individual boxes of 20 rounds usually sold over the counter.

A smashed-open video poker machine, likely taken from a bar, was left lying on the sidewalk of an Uptown residential street.

In a church-run assisted living home close to a heavily looted Wal-Mart in the lower Garden District, a team of guardsmen found new bicycles, stereos and clothing. Someone associated with the church, who refused to give his name, said at least seven rooms in the four-story residence were filled with goods believed to be stolen.

New Orleans police are storing seized loot in a makeshift warehouse near the city's train station, Defillo said. He declined to provide details on how many goods had been found, how many businesses or homes had been looted, or if authorities had any long-term plan to track down some of the culprits.

"We haven't even had time to deal with that yet," he said. ....

From Richard L. Johnston, M.D.

What the news does not show...

Thought I might inform the few friends I have on my recent traumatic
experience. I am going to tell it straight, blunt, raw, and I don't give a
damn. Long read, I know but please do read!

I went to volunteer on Saturday at the George R. Brown convention for two
reasons.

A: I wanted to help people to get a warm fuzzy.

B: Curiosity.

I've been watching the news lately and have seen scenes that have made me
want to vomit. And no it wasn't dead bodies, the city under water, or the
sludge everywhere. It was PEOPLE'S BEHAVIOR. The people on T.V., (99% being
Black) were DEMANDING help. They were not asking nicely but demanding as
if society owed these people something. Well the honest truth is WE DON'T.
Help should be asked for in a kind manner and then appreciated. This is not
what the press (FOX in particular) was showing, what I was seeing was a
group of people who are yelling, demanding, looting, killing, raping, and
SHOOTING back at the demanded help! So I'm thinking this can't possibly
be true can it???? So I decide to submit to the DEMAND for help out of
SHOCK. I couldn't believe this to be true of the majority of the people who
are the weakest of society. So I went to volunteer and help folks out and
see the truth. So I will tell the following story and you decide:

I arrived at the astrodome only to find out that there were too many
volunteers and that volunteers were needed at the George R. Brown
Convention Center. As I was walking up to the Convention Center I noticed a
line of cars that wrapped around blocks filled with donations. These were
ordinary Houstonians coming with truckloads and trunks full of water,
diapers, clothes, blankets, food, all types of good stuff. And lots of it
was NEW. I felt that warm fuzzy while helping unload these vehicles of
these wonderful human beings. I then went inside the building and noticed
approximately 100,000 sq. ft. of clothes, shoes, jackets, toys and all
types of goodies all organized and ready for the people in need. I signed
up, received a name badge and was on my merry way excited to be useful.

I toured the place to get familiar with my surroundings; the entire place is
probably around 2 million sq. ft. I noticed rows as far as the eye can see
of mattresses, not cots, BLOW UP MATTRESSES! All of which had nice
pillows and plenty of blankets. 2 to 3 bottles of water lay on every bed.
These full size to queen size beds by the way were comfortable, I laid in
one to see for myself. I went to look at the medical area. I couldn't
believe what my eyes were seeing! A makeshift hospital created in 24
hours! It was unbelievable, they even had a pharmacy. I also noticed that
they created showers, which would also have hot water. I went upstairs to
the third floor to find a HUGE cafeteria created in under 24 hours! Rows of
tables, chairs and food everywhere - enough to feed an army! I'm not
talking about crap food either. They had Jason's deli food, apples,
oranges, coke, diet coke, lemonade, orange juice, cookies, all types of
chips and sandwiches. All the beverages by the way were put on ice and
chilled!! In a matter of about 24 hours or less an entire mini-city was
erected by volunteers for the poor evacuees. This was not your rundown crap
shelter, it was BUM HEAVEN.

So that was the layout: great food, comfy beds, clean showers, free medical
help, by the way there was a library, and a theatre room that I forgot to
mention. Great stuff right????

Well here is what happened on my journey -

I started by handing out COLD water bottles to evacuees as they got off the
bus. Many would take them and only 20% or less said thank you. Lots of them
would shake their heads and ask for sodas! So this went on for about 20-30
minutes until I was sick of being an unappreciated servant. I figured
certainly these folks would appreciate some food! So I went upstairs to
serve these beloved evacuees some GOOD food that I wish I could have at the
moment!

***The following statements are graphic, truthful, and discuss UNRATIONAL
behavior***

Evacuees come slowly to receive this mountain of food that is worth serving
to a king! I tell them that we have 2 types of great deli sandwiches to
choose from - ham and turkey. Many look at the food in disgust and DEMAND
burgers, pizza, and even McDonalds!! Jason's deli is better than
McDonalds!! Only 1 out of ten people who took something would say "thank
you" the rest took items as if it was their God give right to be served
without a shred of appreciation! They would ask for Beer and liquor. They
complained that we didn't have good enough food. They refused food and
laughed at us. They treated us volunteers as if we where SLAVES. No not all
of them of course, but 70% did!! 20% were appreciative, 10% took the
food without any comment and the other 70% had some disgusting comment to
say. Some had the nerve to laugh at us. And when I snapped back at them for
being mean, they would curse at me! Needless to say I was in utter shock.
They would eat their food and leave their mess on the table. Some would
pick up their stuff, many would leave it for the volunteers to pick up. I
left that real quick to go down and help set up some more beds. I saw many
young ladies carrying mattresses and I helped for a while. Then I realized
something. There were hundreds of able bodied young men who could help!! I
asked a group of young evacuees in their teens and early twenties to help.
I got cursed at for asking them to help! One said "We just lost our
fucking homes and you want us to work!!" The next said "Ya Cracker, you got
a home we don't" I looked at them in disbelief. Here are women walking by
carrying THEIR BEDS and they can't lift a finger and help themselves!!

WHY SHOULD I HELP PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO HELP THEMESELVES!!

I waved them off and turned away and was laughed at and more "white boy
jokes" were made at me. I felt no need to waste my breath on a bunch of
pitiful losers. I went to a nearby restroom where I noticed a man shaving.
I used the restroom, washed my hands and saw this man throw his razor
towards the trash can...he missed. he walked out leaving his disgusting
razor on the floor for some other "cracker" to pick up. Even the little
kids were demanding. I saw only ONE white family and only TWO Hispanic
families. The rest where blacks. Sorry 20% to 30% decent blacks, and 70%
LOSERS!

I would call them N*****S, but the actual definition of a n*****r is one
who is ignorant, these people were not ignorant..they were ARROGANT
ASSHOLES. The majority of which are thugs and lifetime lazy ass welfare
recipients. We are inviting the lowest of the low to Houston. And like
idiots we are serving the people who will soon steal our cars, rape,
murder, and destroy our city while stealing from our pockets on a daily
basis through the welfare checks they take. We will fund our own
destruction.

By "US" I don't mean a specific race, I mean the people who work hard, work
smart, have values and morals. Only people who want to help themselves
should be helped, the others should be allowed to destroy themselves. I do
not want to work hard, give the government close to half the money I earn
so they can in turn give it to a bunch of losers.

I don't believe in being poor for life. My family immigrated here, we came
here poor, and now thank God, and due to HARD WORK we are doing fine. If
immigrants, who come here, don't know the language can work and become
successful... WHY CAN'T THE MAJORITY OF THE HOMEGROWN DO IT! If
we continue to reward these losers then we will soon destroy our great
country. I just witnessed selfish, arrogant, unappreciative behavior by the
very people who need help the most. Now these same people who cursed me,
refused my cities generosity, who refuse to help themselves are DEMANDING
handouts on their own terms! They prance around as if they are owed
something, and when they do receive a handout, they say it's not good
enough! Well you know what..these types of people can go to hell for all I
care!

I have seen two cases of M.D. rants over the people in N.O. Is Dr. Cracker part of the problem or part of the solution?
You are ignorant if you think you only convey information with words. I have seen the body language, black vs white, daily in MS and AL. I have seen even hard working coworkers of color stiffen up when the "man" comes to help.
How do you normally rate a MD’s arrogance? I guess I would rate it a 10 out of 10, but then I normally stiffen up as they try to talk down to me.
On the question of looting, frankly I feel it would happen anywhere in the US, with any segment of the population. Certainly the Tyco and Enron people were taking advantage of the owners, looting the store so to speak. The few managers here likely took more than all the looters in N.O.
Microsoft has not lied, cheated and manipulated the market to obtain their dominant position!! Yet many of us admire Microsoft’s success. If we took the silver spoon out of Mr. Gates mouth how would he perform?
After a lose of our house, contents and vehicle in December 99 to a fire, someone decided to come and loot the only item untouched, the $500 dollar barbeque. The person that looted the propane grill, had a truck to cart it away, so they were not truly more needy than I at that point. They just decided to take advantage of the situation and had no for the person who had just lost it all.
We need to recognize that the moral problems in American society are not a “we–they” problem. In the last year and a half I have seen corporate elite in America at work, first hand. I was lied to, cheated and physically threaten. None of this was do to absolute necessity, but because they felt their jobs might be threatened. They would rather place hundreds of people out of work than lose their elite position. ....

One of the things I must constantly remind myself is not everyone thinks along the same lines as I do. Like most members of this board, if I want a better life, I'm going to make a plan and then go after it. Be it more technical training, a better job, a degree or advanced degree, etc. It seems obvious to us. However, it's not obvious to everyone. Nor is every person out there willing to put in the effort to get ahead.

I rememebr when my dad told me over the phone "Sorry son, we're broke." So there I sat, middle of the college semester owing the university about $2k and no financial help coming in from the parents anymore. I made it happen through extra jobs, hard work, less sleep, etc. But that's not obvious to everyone. That's the hard part to keep in mind.

Given that situation, plenty of people would have dropped out with the "pity me" excuse and never finished. One of the biggest lessons I learned from finishing up school pretty much on my own was there is plenty of help out there...if you aren't an unmarried childless white male. But the key is you have to want to seek that out. You have to step up to the plate and make it happen. Seems obvious to me and many others. But it's not obvious to so many or they just don't want to put forth the effort.

I can be poor for 4 years and work my butt off. at the end of the 4 years I can be making $35k depending on career choise. Or I can take the easy road and make $8/hr working at McDonalds. After 4 years, I might be a shift supervisor making whatever that pay is, but probably less than $35k/year. Over the long haul, the time spent in school earning a degree or learning a trade will pay out more. Seems like an obvious choice, but it's not. You have to want it enough to actually do it.

I remember when Wisconsin changed it's welfare rules. The left screamed about people starving in the streets and mass homelessness. That didn't happen. People picked up and moved back to Chicago once their welfare benefits ran out in Wisconsin.

There are many different ways to look at this. Many of these people view the welfare check as an entitlement. I'm entitled to it for existing so where's MY money? Give my check, whitey. Instead of taking advantage of all the scholarship and education programs created to offset and correct the wrongs of racism, they feel they are entitled to collect a check for just existing. They come from a compact slum where everyone is out for themselves. Anyone trying to help is just a sucker to be taken advantage of. Different lifestyle and one I and many others don't understand, but then these people don't understand our lifestyles. It works both ways.

My point in rambling on is there are different sides and I must constantly remind myself of this. I have to do that in my job. What seems obvious to me doesn't get through others. When I visited a warehouse, I was trying to make changes and improvements. We need the people to do their jobs correctly. Seems obvious? Wrong. Some people just don't care, they are putting in the time necessary collect the check. It's a foreign attitude for me. But I must remind myself that it exists and it's what I have to work with.

It's easy to bash the people of NEw Orleans and I've doneit myself. Is it embarrassing for those images to br broadcast across the world? Yes. But we have very different groups of people in the US just like everywhere else. Germany and France have those working to get ahead. But they also have those that take advantage of a very generous welfare system. So why work hard when I can live good enough for me by collecting a check from the state? "Where's my check?" Really no different from the US. ....
