Well this board has been sitting here empty (more or less) for a while so I thought I'd put it to some use. We have recieved our first shipment of KAMA tractors. (Yes there are Chinese tractors other than JINMA!) I am impressed (even beyond my bias as a dealer). These feature a mechanical shuttle shift (must stop but not change gear ratio). Models are availabe from 25 to 50 HP. We also have a parts channel for Tai SHan and KAMA tractors and are working at building up the spares available in the USA. There are several Jinma dealers that are doing the same for that brand. Parts are also much more reasonable for most Chinese tractors than the "popular" brands.

Chip- Tell me more about the Kama tractors. Have they been through the Nebraska Tractor Lab. THis is required of all tractors 40HP or larger before they can be sold in Nebraska. I sell Lenar and could use the availability of a larger line of tractors. Let me know how they price out and what their claim-to-fame is. Thanks! Russ ....

Russ,
The KAMA is a design by Worldbest Kama, a consortium of Chinese manufacturers who got together to develope products that would appeal to the world market. The factory that produces the tractor for us is the largest producer of mid size tractors for the domestic market with 60% market share and over 25,000 units per year. I have these on the ground and would invite you to come see. IMO the casting quality and overall workmanship exceeds the more popular Chinese brands sold in the US, the engines are easy starting direct injection and the gearboxes are constant mesh for easier shifting.

Is the 40HP testing requirement based on gross or PTO HP? send me your email address and I can send you some additonal info. A 40HP version of the KM is also available. ....

The Terraplane 38HP is a DongFeng or DF tractor. These tractors have a solid reputation. Your friend may also want to look at the KAMA TS354C or KM454 before making a decision. IMO these are some of the best China has to offer. Jinma also build a tractor in this size catagory, either 35 or 40HP the Jinma has the largest number of dealers and their smaller tractors have made them very popular in the US. If your friend would consider a smaller tractor, than Lenar (also sold as Agtraxx) is of Comparable quality to the DF or KAMA, but it is only available in 28HP at present. Of course the dealer can add to or detract from the overall value of any tractor purchase. ....

Just FYI, i have a 790 jd that i really enjoy. I have a good friend that is the head of the jd service department that is 27 miles from us. Thanks again. ....

Thats a lot of snow! White Christmas We get 2 or 3 inches about every other year! But on the other hand it can get to 100 in the Summer here so it isn't perfect. As a kid I lived outside of Detroit, I remember a 12" snow once, but been back there in the winter and don't miss it a bit. ....

Well now that DF has been talked about who is the new "task master " line made by ? is it too a DF product ?, and now that you have looked at the DF how does it compare with the Jinma line and its affiliate names ....... yes they seem solid but how does the DF compare without knocking one or the other ?
To a point they all seem to look the same the one thing I kinda wonder about is why other than the big 3 and Jinma no other Chinese maker offers something from the 16-20 hp market with a slightly smaller frame funny they would not go after this as the big 3 have many in this class.
Well inquiry minds what to know as usual any help would be appriciated.

have a good day all .... enjoy your tractors !

Terry... my impression is that they are selling us the tractors designed/sized for Chinese farming.

Much the same as the first Kubota's and Yanmars that came through the pipe were really just Japanese farm tractors that didn't have modern three point hitches and such.

In fact most were quite underpowered with 2 cylinder 12-14 hp engines and really were not well suited to the uses we put CUT's to, such as brush hogging and blowing snow.

I suspect when the Chinese get the feedback from this marketplace they will respond with 20 hp, 2000# machine with all the fixings. They are already making stabs at the 4 wheeler/ATV market..... so someone over there is paying attention.

Hi Mark;

Thanks for your thoughts, I have a Yanmar 165D 4x4 right now but am wanting to get a bit bigger JM 184 , so I am trying to get a feel for the Jinma, I have looked at them
yes I agree they are not even quite as refined as my 20 year old Yanmar but call me a fool for the underdog, I am somehow enticed to them , maybe because they are different.
Well If I get one and it gives me anywhere near the service my 165D gives me well I will be pleased and Im sure with a bit of TLC they will do this faithfully.
Im sure in the next 5 years we will see huge changes in the Jinma, Im sure they will soon look and run like any of the others.

Who the hell really cares what a tractor looks like? Its how they work and last that matters, for 8,000 dollars less then jd or kob,for same SIZE,I can do without some bells and blow things.I still say you are better off getting a 25 h.p sears mower to mow your yard and a 8,000 dollar jinma to do your other work, then getting an oversized lawnmower with 4wd to try and do both, your still thousands ahead, and you actually have equipment sized for your job. The 35 HP sells a little over $8K, loader will add about $3K
(thanks to rising steel prices US loaders and implements seem to be rising).
The TS254C 25HP model can be had for around $9K with a loader. Backhoes are available. ....

Oops, sorry, forgot the mower part of the question!
for general mowing, up to 5' brush or 6' finish ont the TS254C, the 35HP still fits best with these sizes although Im confident it will pull a 6' brush mower in "light-moderate duty" applications (not clearing young forests).

The shifting should get easier as it gets broken in, This is a mechanical shuttle, must stop to shift. We have asked the factory to make the lever a little longer to make it easier to reach and to shift, you could probably add an extension onto your lever if you wanted to. But wait till you have a few hours to see if you really need it. ....

Hi Durwood,

Sorry to be so long in responding - I have been away from the computer for several days.

The Benye has been a great tractor - tough, rugged and dependable. I owned the 34HP - 4WD. The finish work is rough, but the basic structure is solid. A real work horse. I had the Benye for 5 years and put about 800 hours on the machine - sold it for a bit over 50% over what I paid for it in 1999. Hope this is useful to you. ....

I lost two weeks on out of state business, so I've actually only been able to put about 18 hours on it. That said, it's a REAL tractor - compared to the Jinma it replaced. Direct injection, 8x8 shuttle shift, two hydraulic pumps, twin remotes, draft control, sprung seat, and even a 12v DC outlet.

Fit and finish was typically Chinese, but being a former Jinma owner I was prepared for that. There were more cases of TFOT (things falling off tractor) than the Jinma though. Only one problem actually caused a work stoppage though; a fuel line blew at 13 hours. I think my Jinma fuel line lasted about 60 hours. Everything else was minor, a few of them plain old pilot error.

Much better looking than the Jinma, hydraulic opening hood and sunken battery tray are a welcome change. No problems mowing uphill either, L3 or L4 for just about everything. Jinma had an aggravating need for L3 to mow uphill, H1 for everyplace else.

Going to have to do something about those wire wrapped fuses though. I think I saw some extra large blade type fuses at AutoZone, but I'm not sure they're big enough. I'm probably going to be breaking ice when it comes to all the other crossover parts too. But Chip's been very helpful so far, I look forward to a long and fruitful relationship (and maybe some crossover numbers).

Yeah, the location of the shuttle shift lever leaves a bit to be desired. Nonetheless, it's far better than the 6x2 creeper it replaced.

Had I a need for yet another tractor, I wouldn't be afraid of another KAMA. And yes, I definitely got what I paid for.

The Maxi-Blade fuse idea didn't work. They look similar, but aren't compatible after all. Now the trick will be to find an electronics supply guy old enough to remember fuse wire. If any of you out there can help, I need 3a, 10a, and 30a fuse wire.

I stopped by and looked at Greg's KAMA a couple months ago and I was impressed. I have been driving tractors for 48 years and my last one was a Zetor. Greg's tractor really is sharp, not at all like what I was expecting based on what I had heard about "China" tractors. Now the car's are starting to come in from China as well. It is clear China factories are serious about the US market and the look and feel of the newer tractors shows that they are listening to the customers. I remember being about 12 and I saw a Ford that looked interesting so I asked my dad about it and he say, "Ahh that is one of them "English" Ford's and not as good as a regular Ford." If you will surf the web concerning AG practices in other parts of the world you will see China built tractors in many places outside of China. ....
