We use our 5040 to pull a large Gravely finish mower and this week the female coupler sheared out and the drive shaft came off. when I inspected the tractor I noticed that the tines on the shaft were about 50% sheared also. Has anyone seen this before? I have been using tractors for over 35 years and have never had this issue. I also noticed that the whole drive shafts three flat sections were also sheared away. Im thinking the condition of the drive shaft may of been responsible for the PTO shaft if it was bouncing around. I will be looking at the whole drive system of finish mower this next week.

Glad no one was injured. Have not seen that, but 35 years is a long time. ....

I've been using tractors off and on for over 30 years and have never seen anything like that. ....

I had a mechanic friend of mine look at the shafts yesterday and he said maybe they weren't being greased and I sided with him that they were not but that would not account for 3' of inside tube shearing off the edges. I just cannot see that being the problem. they still worked without the grease, although maybe not as great but for the everything inside of the outside tube to shear, even over time, it would take some sort of hammering force, either from the PTO or the gear box. At least thats my thoughts. ....

I just got finished inspecting the rest of the shaft really well. here some new information and my thoughts, hope someone else can give me other ideas.

The PTO shaft on the tractor is worn on the right side of each spline, (but the rotation is counter clockwise)

The drive shaft is worn on the opposite side of the shaft (left if looking at it like you were standing behind the tractor looking at the back of the tractor)

This is odd since the wear is on opposite sides of the parts.

hears my thought and it may be out there. the unit behind the tractor is a large finish mower and is pulled at 540rpm
the tractor gets it up to speed turning the drive shaft counter clockwise. something inside the tractor has a catch in it that basically tries to stop the rotation to some extent causing the PTO to jam the drive shaft (which causes the wear on the right side of the spline), the force of the unit run causes the problem inside of the tractor to let go and then this is repeated which causes the pressure on the drive shaft tube (which is weaker metal) which is already up to speed to continue to jam the left side of the shaft causing the wear. It would be very hard to stop the three mowing decks behind the tractor from turning the drive shaft.

My next thought is what on the inside of the tractor may cause the PTO to want to stop working? Back to the shop!

....

Should of done more testing before posting.
I tested the PTO on the Tractor and it turns Clock wise and not counter clockwise. its really quite no sounds or anything when it is running and turning but as soon as you turn it off it stops. if the tractor is running it locks up when you turn it off. this would be the cause of all of my wear on the shafts since they are still trying to turn.

with the tractor turned off you can turn the shaft a little (maybe 1/5 turn) backwards and then forwards but not forwards unless you go backwards first. I do hear a thunk sound when it turns like something dropping and it does this both ways. looks like I will pull off the back section next. ....

I just talked to the service department at my Kubota dealer and was told to install an over run clutch on the tractor to stop the issue.

I would think this would be standard from the factory on a 2008 5040. It seems odd that they would design it where the PTO stops as soon as you turn it off even though you may have a lot of torque still turning on the back side of the PTO.

Well I still have to swap out the PTO shaft and the PTO connector on the Drive shaft as well as both tubes.

Might as well get an Over run clutch also to keep this from happening again. ....

I can't think of to many that will run free! They are supposed to stop quickly so that when someone that doesn't know enough to stay away gets in a machine they don't get hurt as bad as long as someone is there to turn it off!!! ....

Art power to the oto stops the moment you turn the pto off, but does not the weight of say rough cut mowers baldes then continue to spin stopping whennthe energy is used up and not doe to the pto shaft having like a brake on it?

I am right sure on my b2710 and m6800 those blades contiue to run for a little. ....

I know they sell drive shaft clutches that could allow the wind down to stop a little quicker then the Over run clutch, which basically is just a ratchet. All my other tractors are older John Deere and they allow the mowers to slow down on their own.

I can see the safety aspect of having it stop at once but could this not be accomplished by just shutting the tractor down in gear?
