The hinged rear PTO guard that is intended to keep anything from getting wrapped up in the pto finally bugged me to the point of removing it. It was a PIA to connect the pto shaft with that stupid guard in place and I always shut off the engine before connecting the pto anyway.

How many others have removed theirs?

Put me down for a "yup".

Disclaimer: I am the only one who operates this machine. And with all the extra hydraulics and special quick-attach plate, one would have to really contort themselves to get to the PTO, so it's not like it's there for someone to reach in and touch it.

Sadly, I know better. At age 14 while stuck in a snow drift on our 1946 Farmall--bored and freezing waiting for my dad and brother to pull me out, I reached down behind the seat and let the leather belt PTO drive turn in my hand. (Mind you, numerous times my brother and I when riding on the draw bar would take turns doing this while mom drove--stupid? YES times a 1000.) A burr on the shaft grabbed my gloved hand pulling me off the clutch wrapping my hand, wrist and arm under the slow spinning shaft. I was able to pull myself free once the glove was chewed up. I ended up with a dislocated thumb laying on top of my hand a broken in three places.

Ahh yes--living-on-the-edge--on a small farm yet.

We heard that 90% of farm-related injuries happen at home. So we moved. LOL (Kenny, did you git dat?)

I'm jis' sayin' ....

Kinda depends upon the design. Of the last 4 tractors I've owned (that had PTO shields), I removed three of them. The 4th is designed more with the operator in mind - than with a literal application of some overprotective OSHA mandate.

Mine removed also. Try hook up rear finish mower with all shields. It has to be the worst design. What really frosted my butt tractor in shop (JD) and they would not release tractor back to me until shield back on. ....

Mine are still there. One flips up and is not much of an issue but on my CUT it does not and is a pain. But not as much as EW experienced.

The "H" and "M" Farmalls we had when I was a kid had a long flat PTO shield that was an ideal place to mount a toolbox, so Dad had a toolbox on all of them and that sorta made you leave them on.
The flip up shield on the 4310 isn't too bad, plus if you stop the engine you can turn the shaft by hand for lineup.
One of my cousins lost her husband in a PTO accicent, no shield on the tractor and no shield on the shaft. I think about him when I hook up. ....

Ours also flip up out of the way for the most part.

Every single one of them are still (and always will be) in place, aside from it being illegal for us to remove them, it's not very safe, especially for bush-hogging and such.

A piece of fence wire or rope becomes a really scary thing flailing around right behind the operator for a few seconds till it gets would up or broken off.

I've also seen cab glass broken from the impact of a flailing piece of junk.

Best of luck.

Flipping up isn't the problem it's that the damn thing won't *stay* up. I suppose a retaining hook could be stuck on somewhere to hold it up when making the connection.

Yeah, something along those lines. I may just drill a hole in the cover and use a bungee cord to hold it up while hooking up the pto. I'm tired of that stupid thing doing the tomahawk chop on my arms when making the connection. ....
