Or it's running too hot. Check that radiator and oil cooler, if equipped, are clear. And check the coolant level.

Also, a machine that is marginally cooling and then taxed will always run hot or boil over--and stop running--sometimes permanently. ....

By chance did this happen not long after refueling? Could you have bad or contaminated fuel? ....

Sounds like fuel, and all there is downstream of the filter are the pump and the injectors. To get into these, I suggest you invest in the service manual. ....

If the cap is plugged, a vacuum is created in the tank and won't allow fuel to flow. 10-15 minutes may be all it takes to stop sucking until vacuum exists. ....

Do us a favor, tell us more.
How long have you had this tractor? Is it new to you? Other than the running it at about mid throttle for that 15 to 20 minutes was the tractor just sitting there are was it being used? If so what kind of load on it? Any idea when it has been serviced, filters (all) and fluids changed. How long had it been since the tractor had been used without the problem? The fuel in the tractor, how long has it been in it? If recently added where did it come from? If you hauled the fuel was the container clean it was hauled in (water free)?

Based upon the limited info doubt it is overheating in that short of period and low of throttle but could be way wrong. In simple items it really sounds like something is stoppig the fuel flow. Air flow can also stop one but that does not suit some of what you are saying.

I normally buy fuel about 100 gallons at the time. The last tank I bought they were having a problem with that station's gas tank. But when I got home and went to use the diesel it was about 3 water blocker filters later before all the water was out of that fuel. It also required my draining the water filter or fuel seperator on the machines it was put in. (FYI the station closed the next day and is installing new tanks.) I had purchased fuel there many times as they are near me and sell off road fuel.

BTW, I am in Horry County. ....

i have had this tractor only a short while couple months..i bought it at a deal just to cut a couple acres of pasture with small finish mower. when i purhased tractor it looked to be in good shape but no signs of maintancnec at all....so as soon as i unloaded it i changed all filters and fluids....but nothing with cooling system (which is next on my list now) when i bought the tractor i ran it for several minutes before purchasing it. but i dont know if the problem was there when i boughtand i just didnt run it long enough to find it.... today i got the tractor running when it started to loose power i removed the fuel cap... this seemed help slightly but didnt fix the problem once the engine quit i let the tractor sit for an hour or so (attempting to diagnos the overheating possibility) the tractor seemed to run normally again/... i still am not sure how this effects the machine....like i said i am a novice at best....but think i am capable of understanding with a little more information.....i would like to do this same test again to be sure but i am affraid i might cause some permenant damage....i hope these bits of info will spark some ones thinker.....thanks for the help... ....

According to tractordata.com that tractor is suppose to have 4.8 gallons of fuel capacity. If only two gallons is all you can get in drained tank then check out the inside of the tank. No idea if you can on this tank or not but some you can take flash light and see the fuel outlet, if you can see if it is clear. Drain a few ounces of the current fuel into a glass jar or such and let it sit for an hour or so and if there is water in it that will settle to the bottom. Or even pour it slowly on a smooth surface and you will see the water as it will separate from the fuel. If no sign of water and you are getting full fuel flow through your filter would think the issue is else where.

As to overheating, I only see that Earthwrks suggested that but do not see you confirming that it does. Are you seeing any sign it is overheating? Temp gauge, coolant boiling over, radiator low? But on this size engine changing out the coolant would not be that big of a deal. But there could still be clogged radiator, bad thermostat or water pump which changing the coolant would not solve. How about the radiator, can you see through it or is it clogged with dirt or trash? Do no use pressure washer as you can damage the cooling fins, but with engine off and cooled off use water hose to wash through the cooling fins or following Murf's suggestion use a leaf blower (has worked well for me with no concern on engine temp).

I understand you did change out the air filter(s) but look for say a rat's nest of any such trash in the air intake at least up to the filter.

If loosening the fuel cap helped and your tank will really only hold two gallons of fuel, think you will find the problem in the tank. I wonder if possible the tank has collapsed partly or if there has been some kind of trash on purpose or accidently placed in it.

Again per tractordata.com this engine is 16 hp with 13.5 to the pto. What size mower are you using with it? Does it cut off if the mower is not engage, just the tractor idling and it does not matter the rpm or load on the engine on how long it runs before it problems starts? I would think if fuel starvation the higher rpm and load on it the quicker it would show up. Same if it is an overheating issue.

My thinker has thinked out.

i appreciate you ideas....i will check the fuel tank as carefully as possible the tank is easily accessable and i don't know the exactcapacity but i knowi only had a five gallon tank and it's still little less than half full from the last fuel changing.... the tractor does seem to "starve" faster at higher rpm....the mower is a

woods RM59 three small blades. belt drive...

would you consider it safe to test the or clean out the cooling system using only water?? at least for the diagnosis??

i am by no means a mechanic and i sure do thank you... ....

i just ran another "daignosis"......i flushed the radiator and cooling system intirely...i ran the tractor idle at about mid throttle....when the tractor started to "starve" i held the water hose to the front of the radiator......the tractor after only a few seconds ran normally again......i fooled with the radiator lines abit while running and found there was prasure on both this leads me to think the pump is working could this be the thermostat....my question is wouldn't the thermostat just kill the engine whne tempurature got too high????? or is my thinking all wrong???? t]]

thanks any one ....

I missed diagonised my brother's Massey so bad on overheating it sort of scares me here. But, fools rush in,

Was both hoses hot when handling them or did you notice? The lower hose is the cooler water being pulled into the engine and the upper hose is the hot water out of the engine to radiator for cooling. When the engine is cool you can remove the radiator cap and look in it and often see if the pump is pushing water. If the thermostat is bad or you think it is you probably can remove it (might need new gasket for this) and run it and see if that makes any difference. You can also test it by putting in pot of water and heating it and with your wife's cooking thermometer in the pot know what temp it opens at. No idea what temp it should be but you probably could call Altman Tractor there in Floence and they tell you. They are the NH dealership.

If you have one of the guages that read temps by pointing them when your tractor is running check different areas on the radiator to see if the temp is about the same all over. If part of it is clogged it will be cooler than where the coolant is running through it.

I would open the radiator cap and see if the water/coolant is showing movement with the engine running. If so and the top radiator hose is getting warm the probably would try some radiator flush or cleaner.

As to the thermometer killing the engine if it gets too hot...I really doubt that tractor has that feature but it may.

If it is running hot don't be surprise to find the radiator core is clogged and needs professional attention.

By the way, what did the coolant look like when you drained it? Was it rusty or did it look like antifreeze? Once you find the problem do get coolant in that system.

Don't think I have seen this answered, any sign it is boiling over any time? Does it loose coolant when being run? Have you checked the oil since changing it? Please do and be sure it is still at the level you filled it to and it is not milky.

The simplest things to cause it to run hot if you have already changed air filter is trash in the louvers of the radiator and can wash them out with water hose and the next one is bad radiator cap. Almost forgot that. Altman or a parts store may be able to test the cap for you.

wanted to voice my success... i think.... i did a whole host of things...but putting the fuel in a glass container showed what seemed to be an extremely small amount of water in fuel ....this was the fuel i just put in a new jug this past friday......but this time i took some extra time with a flashl light to inspect the tank .... i noticed that the "fuel pickup" in the bottom of the tank was nothing more that a "hole" at the lowest point...no screen to topographical buffer area nothing tp prevent the smallest amount of "anything" to go into the fuel system....tractor seems to be running perfectly and i have for the first time complete my first full cutting...

thanks for all the ideas ....

at the same time i as fuel change i ..i completely flushed the radiator and hoses.....and yes the water was extremely rusty looking...and full of sediment...so at this point i am not sure what the realy problem was..... i was about to break down and take to altman for repair....but the 100 per hour labor charge was very motivating......

That is great.

My thoughts, you had water in fuel the whole time. It really only takes a little water. If your tractor doesn't have a clear fuel filter you can drain you probably should change out the filter just to be sure.

On the coolant, I would run a flush through your system and then refill with clean water and coolant mix.

Have fun with the tractor and here.
